ERC, the organisers of the Heineken Cup, have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Harlequins' move to re-introduce Nick Evans in to the fray after earlier substituting him during their Heineken Cup quarter-final loss to Leinster at the Stoop last weekend.

Evans was re-introduced after an injury to his replacement Chris Malone and a blood injury to winger Tom Williams, who was forced to fill in at fly-half due to the absence of Evans and Malone. Evans had earlier been forced from the field with a knee injury, but remained on the touchline before missing Quins' final drop-goal attempt as they lost 6-5. His reintroduction was assessed by Nigel Owens, the referee, and allowed after a technicality apparently facilitated the move.

"ERC has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blood substitution of Harlequins replacement Tom Williams and the return of Harlequins outside-half Nick Evans to the playing field," read an ERC statement.

"The investigation is being carried out by ERC Disciplinary Officer, Roger O'Connor and will include gathering statements from match officials, the two teams involved and a review of broadcast footage from the game. The ERC Disciplinary Officer will then determine whether any further action is necessary."
