Leinster and Ireland fullback Girvan Dempsey will retire at the end of the season.

Dempsey, 34, played 82 Tests for Ireland and spent much of his career vying with Leicester's Geordan Murphy for the No.15 jersey. He played in two World Cups, in 2003 and 2007, and was part of the Ireland squads that secured Triple Crowns in 2004, 2005 and 2007.

He played his last Test in November 2008, against New Zealand at Croke Park, but was eventually overtaken in the pecking order by his Leinster team-mate Rob Kearney.

Having been named in their squad to take on Edinburgh in the Magners League this weekend, Dempsey could make his 175th appearance for Leinster in the RDS clash. He was an unused replacement in their Heineken Cup final triumph in 2009.
