The Cardiff Blues have ruled out making a move for Toulon prop Gethin Jenkins who is reportedly keen to end his spell with the Top 14 Orange side.

Jenkins joined the French big-spenders in time for the current season but he has hardly played for Bernard Laporte's side this season. Instead, England loose-head Andrew Sheridan has played the majority of their games with Jenkins left on the bench.

And with his international stock seemingly declining, with Wales preferring Bath prop Paul James - who is playing week-in-week-out in the Aviva Premiership - to Jenkins, he has reportedly sounded out the Blues about returning to the club he left six months ago.

But Phil Davies, the Blues director of rugby, has ruled out an approach for the British & Irish Lion due to the constraints of the £3.5m salary cap that is in place for the Welsh regions.

"There is always speculation but it's not practical because our salary cap is where it is," Davies told the BBC. "We have spoken about Gethin but he is contracted to Toulon.

"We may not have somebody of Gethin's experience, but we have young players like Sam Hobbs and Tom Davies, who are 19 and 23 and they are outstanding young players, and they are the future of the Blues. We wish Gethin well, he is a fantastic player and did a great job for us, but now we have young players who want emulate his career."
