Cardiff Blues have completed work on the installation of an artificial pitch at their Arms Park home.

The RaboDirect PRO12 side opted to follow the lead of Aviva Premiership side Saracens and rip up their grass pitch earlier this year after bad weather and a congested fixture schedule ruined the historic playing surface.

The proposal for a hi-tech pitch was signed off in June and work has now been completed at a cost of £400,000. The Western Mail reports that the Blues hope the new surface will result in an improved spectacle for fans while the improved durability and versatility of the pitch offers the region a valuable revenue stream in terms of the hire of the facilities.

Chief executive Richard Holland told the newspaper: "It's just incredible. Having walked on it, it's a softer surface than most park pitches are at this time of year.

"Having seen it every day and watched the project develop, it's just remarkable. We are delighted and looking forward to people getting on it."
