Gloucester are set to win the race for James Hook's signature after the Aviva Premiership club agreed terms with the Perpignan fly-half.

According to a report in the Rugby Paper, Hook will join Gloucester after activating a release clause in his Perpignan contract which stipulated he could leave should the club suffer relegation from the Top 14.

Perpignan dropped out of the French top-flight on the last day of the season with a narrow 25-22 defeat by Clermont, leaving Hook with the prospect of playing next season in France's Pro D2.

Gloucester are in need of a replacement for the departing Freddie Burns, who leaves the West Country to join Leicester Tigers this summer.

Hook's future has been the subject of extensive speculation, with Ospreys known to have shown an interest in bringing him back to the region he left in 2011. The Wales international has also been linked with French side Lyon, the Premiership's London Irish, and even a possible move to Japan.
