Newcastle Falcons are keen to tie director of rugby Dean Richards down on to a new contract.

Richards' contract is up at the end of the campaign and in a season where the Falcons' attendances are up 18% and they are playing with an adventurous attacking style, Falcons managing director Mick Hogan wants to begin contract talks with their coach.

"Dean's contract is up in the summer and we're looking to extend it," Hogan told The Rugby Paper. "He's been great for Falcons. He's one of, if not the most successful coaches in Premiership history and he understands the balance between planning for 3-5 years down the line and having a game the coming Saturday that we need to win.

"He understands the budget he's got to work with and you'll never hear a word of complaint from him about wanting more money. He's held in very high regard up here. He's moved his family up and they enjoy the area."
