After winning the British Formula Three Championship in 1980 and being a leading figure in Formula Two in the early 1980s, the genial and popular Swede clearly had Formula One potential, but it was not until mid-1983 that he made his debut with the fledgling Spirit-Honda team.
Honda switched its engine to Williams in 1984, and Stefan had to put up with a few guest drives for Tyrrell and Toleman, for whom he looked set to be the number one driver in 1985 before a dispute over tyres left him without a drive. Ferrari provided him with a lifeline, hiring Stefan to replace René Arnoux.
The Swede earned two second places in 1985, and impressed enough to be kept on for 1986, when a succession of mechanical problems and bad luck led to him being replaced by Gerhard Berger for 1987. Stefan went to McLaren, but he was outpaced by Alain Prost and dropped for Ayrton Senna for 1988. He moved to Indy Cars in 1991 and has run teams in sports cars, Indy Lights and Indy Cars. He was still racing sports cars himself in 2003, encouraged no doubt by winning the Sebring 12 Hours and then Le Mans 24 Hours in 1997.
