In the same season he lost the Formula 3000 title to Christian Fittipaldi, Alessandro made his Formula One debut with Jordan.
He became a Benetton test driver in 1992, moved on to race for Lotus in 1993 and was lucky to survive a huge accident at Spa, after which he was replaced by Pedro Lamy.
He won his seat back in 1994, but had no drive in 1995. Moving to Indy Cars, he was runner-up in 1996 and then champion in both 1997 and 1998. However, his Formula One return with Williams in 1999 was a disaster, producing no points. In 2001 Alessandro lost both of his legs in a crash in an Indy Car race in Germany. Happily he is now walking again, even racing in touring cars.
