Jean-Marc Gounon came to Formula One after winning the French Formula Three Championship in 1989 and then enjoying some success in Formula 3000. In 1993 he seemed set to drive for March but the firm withdrew from F1 before the season started. Funding from a French government scheme introduced to cushion the blow from the withdrawal of tobacco advertising enabled him to buy a two-race deal with Minardi but he failed to make an impression. The following year he was drafted into the Simtek team when Andrea Montermini broke his leg, and he managed to finish ninth in the French Grand Prix, both his and his team's best result. Although he qualified every time, he was never off the last row of the grid and his car was never close to being competitive. But after seven outings he was replaced by the better-funded Domenico Schiattarella. By then he was already involved in sports-car racing, and from 1996 he pursued this full-time with some success.
