Luigi Musso dominated sports car racing in Italy in the early 1950s before buying a Maserati 250F, winning the non-championship Pescara Grand Prix and finishing second in the Spanish Grand Prix in 1954.
A string of good results in 1955 saw him join Ferrari for 1956, and he won his first race, the Argentinian Grand Prix, sharing his Lancia-Ferrari with Juan Manuel Fangio before a crash in a sports car race prematurely ended his season.
In 1957 he won the non-championship Marne Grand Prix, but was by now struggling to keep pace with team-mates Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins.
Chasing them at Reims in the 1958 French Grand Prix, he ran wide on a long, fast corner, and the car flipped in a ditch. The unfortunate Musso died later in the day in hospital.
