Mr Successful in American racing, Mark never made the grade in Formula One. His early career was financed by sports car driver Walt Hansgen, but then Roger Penske signed him up. This pair won the TransAm title and the Daytona 24 Hours in 1968 and 1969, then took second place in the 1970 Indy 500, won the TransAm series again, led the Indy 500 and won an Indy Car race. Mark made his Formula One debut in a Penske-entered McLaren in the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing third. He won the Indy 500 in 1972, but was injured by crashing his CanAm Porsche.
Using the same turbocharged Porsche, he stormed the 1973 CanAm series, then announced his retirement, but returned when Penske decided to go Formula One in 1974. The Penske chassis was not a success and it was replaced with a March after Mark had scored one fifth place. He was fifth first time out in the March, but a crash in practice for the Austrian Grand Prix left him unconscious. He apppeared to recover, but died from a brain haemorrhage two days later.
