Qualifying

Hello and welcome to ESPN's live coverage of qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Hard to exactly predict where everyone stands going into qualifying but Mercedes looks strongest after the three practice sessions. Red Bull should be right up there with the world champions, though, and I would wager we are yet to see the absolute limit of what either team can do around here.

Ferrari looked to have taken a step back in FP3 earlier today, with Vettel complaining that set-up changes had taken the feel out of the rear of the car. Singapore isn't a place you want to have an erratic car balance, so that will be a concern going into qualifying.

Behind that, McLaren looks to have been off its own prediction - the team believed it would be the fourth best around Singapore. So far however they've struggled and it seems the team is having similar set-up issues to Ferrari. Toro Rosso looks very good around this circuit, which might be the last chance to score good points this season. But Force India has looked strongest out of all "the rest" and are my bet for a spot (or two) on the fourth row.

Important not to rule Williams out of that cluster of teams I mentioned below - there's always Williams to consider as well. Hard to judge where they stand at the moment but I don't think they'll be on a par with Force India.

Looking back to the front - an interesting thing to keep an eye on will be Hamilton, who has looked out of sorts this weekend. Yesterday he bailed out of his qualifying simulation and then made a mistake on today's in FP3 - meaning he's yet to complete a clean lap on the ultra-soft tyre.

Just over 10 minutes to go until the start of Q1.

As a reminder of last year's qualifying, Vettel took pole with a 1:43.885. The nearest Mercedes was Hamilton, 1.5s off the pace in fifth position.

The lights are glaring over the circuit - it really creates an amazing backdrop over the Marina Bay.

Kylie Minogue taking a tour of the McLaren garage. That might be as good as the evening gets for McLaren, looking at their pace over the three practice sessions...

Engines start to rumble in the pit lane as the clock ticks towards the beginning of Q1.

The clock starts ticking and off we go - Wehrlein's Manor the first out of the pit lane.

Rosberg stops at the end of the pit lane to do a practice start on his fresh new tyres. Shows you another area of concern for Mercedes this weekend.

Hamilton and Rosberg have gone straight out on ultra-soft tyres, so Mercedes clearly not feeling confident enough to get through this session on a harder compound tyre.

Rosberg has a lock up through his middle sector, but the car still looks fairly well planted through the corners.

Rosberg posts a 1:45.316.

Hamilton a bit sloppy through the penultimate corner but still shaves two tenths off the mark set by Rosberg to go top on a 1:45.167.

Not massively eye-opening times for the Mercedes drivers there... was expecting much quicker from that.

Button's first attempt sees him go into third, 1.2s off the pace of the Merc drivers. We're yet to see any times from Ferrari or Red Bull.

Hulkenberg also out there on the ultra-soft tyre.

Hulkenberg crosses 0.914s down, and is immediately beaten by Massa - that time has come out of nowhere.

Bottas can't beat teammate Massa or Hulkenberg, slotting into fifth - just 0.005s down on the Force India. It's looking close between those two teams...

Great lap from Sainz, who goes third - but only briefly as Alonso absolutely flies into third himself! He went purple through the middle sector, too...

Alonso just 0.2s off the Mercedes pair.

It's ultra-soft tyres all around, by the way.

Raikkonen uses every inch of the penultimate corner and crosses in 1:44.964 - enough to claim P1.

Verstappen does a purple second and third sector but misses out on P1 by 0.072s. This is shaping into a very nice fight.

Vettel tells Ferrari something has broken on his anti-roll bar. That could be a big problem for the four-time world champion with only seven minutes to go.

Vettel is currently 21st. He could be in a lot of trouble.

Ricciardo on an absolute flier in the other Red Bull, meanwhile.

Purple in all three sectors and that's a mega, mega lap from Ricciardo - 1:44.225, some seven tenths of a second up on Raikkonen's best. Mega.

Vettel has stayed out.

Current drop-zone: Magnussen, Nasr, Ericsson, Wehrlein, Ocon, Vettel.

Vettel's current lap does not look quick enough to get him into Q2...

He immediately pits. Clearly something broken on that Ferrari.

So, last year's polesitter could be starting from last this year...

"That's just stupid, we're losing time," comes a delayed radio message from Vettel. Hard to tell if that's about the fact he stayed out for another lap. Replays show one of his tyres off the floor as he comes through a corner, so a clear rear suspension problem.

Gutierrez climbs to seventh.

Vettel sat in the Ferrari garage as mechanics get ton work on the rear of his car. He's running out of time.

Off come the gloves - Vettel is out of Q1!!!

Disaster for Ferrari. It's all on Raikkonen now.

Kvyat, who is dangerously close to the drop zone, out on a very good lap as the clocks ticks towards 0:00.

Great lap from Kvyat, who climbs to P5, splitting the Mercedes drivers.

Doesn't look like Hulkenberg made it in time to start a late flying lap - that could be very painful for the German!

Button climbs to fifth. Palmer can't improve on 17th and he's out.

Magnussen improves but only enough to swap places with teammate Palmer. Ericsson then splits the Renaults for 18th.

Wehrlein can't improve on 20th. Ocon can't move away from 21st. Perez climbs away from danger for sixth.

Replays show Palmer having a big lock up into Turn 1 and a lock up. Very scruffy through Turn 1, as well.

So, dropping out: Magnussen, Nasr, Palmer, Wehrlein, Ocon and, in the big surprise, Vettel.

A frustrated Vettel is speaking in the TV pen. He isn't in a very talkative mood - he knows he's got a long evening ahead of him here tomorrow.

Q2 is underway and again both Mercedes drivers head straight out to the circuit on ultra-soft tyres.

All 16 cars are out on track in this session.

Red Bull has sent both drivers out on the super-soft tyres. Remember, if they can get through to Q3 on those tyres they will start the race on them. Let's see if they can make it work. There's plenty of time for a late ultra-soft run if they need to.

Rosberg sets a 1:43.020 - that's a big improvement on Q1. That will be his race tyre, then.

Hamilton crosses four tenths down on Rosberg, but both men are now well within the 1:43s we were expecting to see from the world champions. Rosberg's time is already up on last year's pole time.

Sainz and Kvyat slot into third and fourth. Button and Alonso take the next two places.

Bottas now splits the Toro Rosso's, before Raikkonen crosses in P3 - there's the big turnaround between sessions. He's now over one second behind the Mercedes drivers. Is this how it's going to be in Q3?

Ricciardo moves himself into third position, and then Verstappen into fourth, on the slower super-soft tyre. I don't know if Red Bull will be happy to risk those times later in the session - they may feel more comfortable with a late ultra-soft run.

Perez can only manage 12th.

Button and Alonso have both fallen into the drop zone, 11th and 14th respectively - will need big laps late in this session to get through.

Into the final six minutes of the session.

Rosberg sitting in his cockpit, looking pretty content with P1. Unlikely the Mercedes drivers will want or need to go out again.

Cars are starting to head out for their final runs.

Looks like the top six are happy to sit the end of this session out. Everyone else down the timing screen are out except from Ericsson in 16th, whose session looks to be over prematurely.

Sixth-place Sainz heads out too, so only the top five in the pit lane.

Alonso starts his final attempt - big lap needed if he wants to get himself into Q3.

Two green sectors for Alonso...

Grosjean is in the wall! Yellow flags in sector two. He's gone really deep into the wall.

Button has bailed out of his lap with what looks like a problem.

Alonso climbs to seventh!

Replays show Grosjean losing the rear end at what looks like Turn 7.

Perez and Hulkenberg escaped the drop zone, both Williams drivers did not! They got caught out by the yellow flags.

So, dropping out of Q2: Bottas, Hulkenberg, Massa, Button, Gutierrez, Grosjean, Ericsson.

Replays show Perez coming through the yellow flag zone but not lifting a lot.

Massa and Rob Smedley clearly talking about that very fact. Grosjean's Haas is still being removed from the circuit so they may have time to appeal Perez's lap time.

Those yellow flag rules have since been amended since the controversy around Rosberg's pole lap in Hungary.

Replays show Button gently tagging the wall before he bailed out of his lap.

Stewards confirm Q3 will be delayed by 10 minutes while they fix that barrier.

The barrier in question is down at Turn 10. Strangely, looks like the rear of the car steps out on him as he comes through the corner.

Barrier repairs are ongoing at Turn 10.

Christian Horner pensively looking on from the pit wall. He's got good reason to look happier than he is currently - both drivers will be starting on the super-soft tomorrow regardless of where they finish at the end of Q3.

Stewards confirm Q3 will start in five minutes.

Massa complains about Perez not lifting for yellows at the end of Q2. That debate could be about to rear its ugly head again...

Raikkonen fans waving flags in the FOM cameras. Where can their man finish in the next 15 minutes? All Ferraris hopes are resting on his shoulders.

Q3 is underway, finally.

The mood is tense, the pit lane is busy - this is what Q3 is all about. Both Mercedes drivers straight out, Ferrari holding off to give Raikkonen a bit of clear air.

Everyone but Kvyat out on the circuit now.

"Right front is always very slow to wake up," Hamilton tells Mercedes, probably referring to his front right brake.

Ricciardo the first man to start a flying lap in Q3.

Ricciardo looks a bit wobbly through the first sector, bouncing over some kerbs at Turn 4/5.

Hulkenberg crosses in a 1:44.954.

Rosberg is absolutely flying - he's gone purple through the first two sectors.

Ricciardo crosses in 1:43.741.

Rosberg comes round in 1:42.584, that's a mighty lap from the German.

Verstappen can only manage fourth, he's 1.2s down on Rosberg. Hamilton slots into second but he's a massive 0.7s down on Rosberg.

Sublime stuff from Rosberg so far.

Raikkonen puts himself ahead of the Red Bulls for third. He's just 0.2s down on Hamilton, too.

The cars return to the pits. Verstappen complaining that he wants to leave the pits earlier to get a better out-lap next time round. Says his first attempt was "rubbish".

Rosberg tells Mercedes he has some oversteer in final sector, suggesting he has yet more pace to find.

Rosberg has looked so much more comfortable than Hamilton this weekend. Will he still be on pole in three and a half minutes? We'll find out now - the cars return to the circuit for their final laps.

Red Bull currently 1.1s down on Mercedes - not a gap anyone was expecting to see this weekend. How much can they find now?

Verstappen being told to pass the Mercedes in front of him - he needs to be going faster in that Red Bull to fire up his super-soft tyres.

Again Raikkonen is the last man to leave the garage.

Rosberg and Hamilton start their flying laps.

Ricciardo and Verstappen looking pretty slow through the first sector.

Ricciardo improves in the middle sector, and he needs to in order to overhaul Raikkonen in third.

Ricciardo climbs to second!

Verstappen goes to fourth.

Hamilton can't improve so he will start third unless Raikkonen can do something special. Replays show Hamilton running wide at Turn 1.

Pole for Rosberg!

Well then - that makes tomorrow very interesting. Rosberg, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Verstappen and Raikkonen the top five.

Sainz and Kvyat take sixth and seventh, ahead of Hulkenberg, Alonso and Perez.

"Thank you guys. Very cool qualifying," says Rosberg. Some way to cap your 200th race weekend in F1.

That will make the run down to Turn 1 very interesting tomorrow. The top four split on the tyres they will be starting on.
