Free practice 1

Welcome to the final round of the season in Abu Dhabi. First practice is just ten minutes away and we've got our first shock of the weekend, it's been raining.

Karun Chandhok arrived at the circuit and said: "Is it my sleepy eyes or is it raining?" However, the track dries quickly out here and it should dry pretty quickly.

Mercedes says: "The sun is back out at Yas Marina and we're ready for the start of P1..."

Piero Ferrari is in his team's garage this morning, talking to Stefano Domenicali.

Klien is the first driver on track and they are all going out on intermediates by the looks of it. Alguersuari, Buemi and Petrov are all out.

The track is still damp in places but a dry line should soon appear.

According to the BBC there are some new developments to the Red Bull's F-duct and rear wing.

Webber and Alonso are out on circuit. Both are out on intermediate tyres for an installation lap.

Vettel looks a bit twitchy and runs wide as he finds the level of grip. Schumacher also runs wide.

Fauzy loses the rear of his Lotus and spins to a halt. No damage done to the car but the intermediate tyres look in a bit of a state.

Ferrari reports: "Both drivers are back in the garage. They reported that the track is still damp here and there, especially from T11"

We might not get a huge amount of action over the next 20 minutes or so as the teams wait for the circuit to dry. There is no point for the likes of Alonso and Vettel using up engine mileage in the wet.

Vettel is back out on track but he is cruising round, possibly running an aero test on the new parts Red Bull has this weekend. He returns to the pits without completing a full lap.

The engine cover is off Fauzy's car and the Lotus team are looking in there with flashlights.

On track, Glock is out on slicks but just gets caught out in the final sector.

Ferrari says: "Now it is time to wait until track conditions are better and useful for running"

Webber has gone back out and reports suggest that it is indeed an aero test Red Bull is conducting.

A bit of maintenance work is going on on Liuzzi's front left brake

Paul says: "I have followed F1 for 30 years, I say it's Webber's to win as he has plugged away, that he should back up Vettel for next year. Go Webber!"

Jim asks: "Since it is the final race of the season, can we assume Alonso will be using his low mileage Bahrain engine in qualifying and the race?"

I believe he has already used that one, but you might know more than me. It is certainly on its third race, whichever engine it is.

Paul offers a controversial opinion: "Say if Schuey was in Vettel's poistion this weekend. He would just bump everybody of the track."

Anybody interested in some of the closest title battles that went down to the last race should read today's feature - Going down to the wire. Schumacher's 1994 and 1997 attempts are in there.

Ian asks: "Hi, It might just be me but I feel Ferrari are looking for excuses not to do too many laps. How do you see their engine situation?"

As we mentioned, the engine in all of the top four drivers' cars are on their third and final race. So in theory they are all on the limit, but I suspect Ferrari's practice engine is a little more tired than its rivals. Although, that's not based on an actual source, the teams are very secretive about exact engine mileage and usage.

Hamilton is out slick tyres as a the circuit dries. There are still some damp patches but it is mainly dry.

Renault update: "Short aero run for Vitaly, one lap and he's heading back to the garage. Robert says that it's still very wet under the bridge after having completed another single lap for checks."

30 minutes into the session and we are still waiting for our first timed lap. No cars on track at the moment.

Trulli is on the pit wall talking to team boss Tony Fernandes.

The track is warming up now and we can't be far away from some more action. Once again we are stuck with a chicken and egg situation. Nobody wants to go out because there is no rubbber down but, of course, to put rubber down they need to go out.

Expect to see a fair pit of graining in this session as the tyre struggle for grip on the green surface. But that should improve as the weekend wears on.

Rosberg breaks the silence but is still on the intermediate tyres. He's just cruising round, probably on an aero test. But he is staying out for a second lap. However, he runs wide at turn one - most likely because he's on the wrong tyre.

The only damp patch I can now see on the track is under the Yas Hotel where a bridge crosses the track. Rosberg dives back into the pits without setting a flying lap.

James ask: "Do you have details on the development parts Red Bull may have brought to Abu Dhabi?"

Apparently they are centered on slot gap in the rear wing and the F-duct. The truth is that Red Bull bring a lot of updates to each race but they are far less open with the press about what they do to the car compared to McLaren.

Ian says: "Hi, Fauzy's probably keen to get out but I don't think Lotus want to risk it."

Yep, it seems that way. He did spin on his first installation lap so you can understand that concern. Alguersuari just said on the radio that he doesn't want to go out until someone else does. This is getting tedious.

Remco says: "There's been so many speculations on Vettel and if he will move over to help Webber to the title on Sunday, but has anyone thought of this one:

Let's say, in Sunday's race on the final lap, Vettel is in 1st position, Webber in 2nd and Alonso in 3rd. To help Webber and Red Bull to the title, Vettel lets Webber overtake him to become champion. But what if then Alonso has to retire suddenly? What will Webber do... does he let Vettel overtake him again, and make Vettel champion, or won't he to get the title himslef... that would be Vettel's worst nightmare I guess... and a very dramatic end of the 2010 Red Bull saga...

Therefore, let's hope Alonso will not have to retire..."

It's a good point. I suppose he'll leave it until the very last lap before letting Webber through.

Button heads out on track but is on intermediates again.

Force India says: "Not much happening at the moment. Track is still wet from the rain and still very green"

Petrov is out on slicks and it does look very slippery. There is a fine, white dust that has been left on the track and that is making it difficult for the drivers.

Petrov sets a 1:51.465, over ten seconds off the lap record. Hulkenberg is only marginally quicker on a 1:51.207.

Buemi and Liuzzi are also out on track.

Massa is also out on hard tyres.

Hulkenberg ups the pace with a 1:48.863. The track will continue to improve throughout the session.

Webber and Alonso are out on track now.

Massa is fourth fastest and was on a fast lap before being told that the telemetry is not working and to come back in. But he stays out for another lap anyway.

Petrov's best time is a 1:46.028, he's been out longer than any other driver. Alonso is currently 0.391 off in second.

Alonso is getting his tyres up to temperature with a 1:45.807.

Webber clocks the fastest time with a 1:45.177, Alonso and Petrov have returned to the pits.

Button is now out on track but hasn't set a time yet. Hamilton is still in the garage.

Vettel is pushing hard and clocks a 1:44.274, 0.9 seconds faster than Webber.

Webber is responding with a quick lap. He is clearly pushing hard but still struggling for grip. He sets a 1:43.840, 0.434 ahead of Vettel.

Kubica pops up to third but is 0.888 off Webber.

We're still waiting for Hamilton, not sure if there is a problem with his car.

Denise says: "Vettel should realise that if he does not help Webber this year, he can expect no help from Webber next year. Webber will then go all out to win the title next year. So it is in Vettel interest to play the team game this year. I for one do not have a problem with the swopping of drivers if for the right reason."

Schumacher gets an armful of oversteer and gets very close to the wall on the exit of turn 19.

Webber is back in the pits, Vettel is currently 0.178 off his team-mate's best time.

Button is third fastest and, promisingly for McLaren, just 0.201 off Webber.

Hamilton is now on track and has started his first flying lap of the session.

Force India says: "'Very low traction on the track' says our German driver"

Alonso is currently a long way off the pace of the Red Bulls but that's no surprise as we've seen Ferrari run heavy on Friday at almost every race this season.

Hamilton has clocked a time but it is 9 seconds off the pace, his pace should improve over the final 15 minutes.

Hamilton has set the fastest first sector but is way off the pace in sectors two and three. He's got a clear track now so should put in a decent lap.

Hamilton is 0.390 up through sector two... but just misses out in the final sector and laps 0.022 off Webber.

Fauzy's Lotus has burnt a whole in its engine cover, clearly there are some problems there.

Vettel and Webber are back on track and Vettel is fastest with a 1:43.477.

Hamilton is right on the pace in the first and second sectors but off the pace in the tight and twisty final sector. No surprises there.

Renault says: "Robert reports oversteer, warm up of tyres was OK."

Hamilton is currently 0.295 off Vettel, so McLaren is clearly quite competitive here and should have good race pace.

But Vettel puts his rivals in their place and goes 0.595 faster than Hamilton.

Hamilton is pushing very hard and ran wide through the final two corners but still set a time 0.192 off the lead Red Bull.

Webber is currently 0.663 off Vettel with Button just 0.2 seconds behind in fourth.

Hamilton has returned to the pits and has completed 12 laps.

Button improves to third ahead of Webber. Vettel is on another fast lap... but got baulked by Fauzy and lost nearly a second in the final sector.

Alonso is going out for one last run.

Button complains of a lot of front locking and is struggling to resolve it.

Vettel can't match Hamilton in sector one but is 0.6 seconds faster than the McLaren in the final two sectors.

Hamilton is back out on track for one last attempt.

Webber isn't going to improve, Hamilton will have one last attempt.

Webber returns to the pits 1 second off the pace of his team-mate.

Hamilton and Vettel don't look likely to improve.

Webber is out of his car and inspecting his hard tyres. He doesn't look impressed.

Kubica looks quick but we can expect some better times from Alonso tomorrow. Massa is 11th and still struggling.

Sashi says: "For better reasons, Massa needs to be replaced as Ferrari driver for 2011 season. I don't see him as a contender."

Thank you for joining us for the session and make sure you check back at 13:00 GMT for FP2.

Just before I leave I can tell you that Barrichello has stopped on track. No smoke from the back of his Williams, he might have run out of fuel after staying out for an extra lap to do a practice start.
