Free practice 3

Morning all, and welcome to live commentary of the third and final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

With five minutes to go until the session, it's hot again. The track hasn't reached the peak of 50C from yesterday, but still enough to test the Pirelli tyres more than in Australia.

Red Bull say that KERS is worth 18 metres off the start line here in Malaysia, and they are running the system again today but have yet to confirm that it will stay on the car for qualifying and the race.

Ferrari and Renault had a few issues yesterday, and it was hardly smooth running for HRT with its new front wing. Plenty of points to discuss today, so if you want to get involved then drop us an email using the link above. For those who prefer Twitter, you can get in touch with us @ESPNF1_live or using the hasthag #ESPNF1.

The session is underway, and Paul Di Resta is the first man on track.

Installation laps for Di Resta, Perez, Alguersuari and Heidfeld so far.

A busy start as everyone but Webber, Karthikeyan and Liuzzi have been out on an installation lap.

Michael Schumacher looks like he'll be the first to set a time as he leaves the pits again. Mercedes had an improved day yesterday but Ross Brawn warned they were still a long way off Red Bull.

Andrew says: "Hi, love your live feed, I'm from Melbourne and cant wait for this race! Lets hope Webber can do much better!"

Glad we're keeping you happy Andrew. Webber will be looking to build on yesterday when he was quickest in both sessions.

And Schumacher promptly returns to the pits to make my prediction of him setting the first time completely wrong.

Webber has completed an installation lap now too, so only the HRT's are yet to venture out.

So while it's quiet out there, just a little run down of today: We're 10 minutes in to this hour-long session, and we will then have qualifying for you at 16:00 local time (09:00 BST).

Nobody on track right now, so get your questions in to us using the link above, or we might not have a lot to do today.

"Hi guys thanks for being there. Adam here living in Albany WA with no TV coverage of F1 until 11.30 Sunday night so it is great to be kept up to date."

You're welcome Adam, thanks for following. You can get excited about cars on track too as D'Ambrosio, Trulli and Petrov head out.

D'Ambrosio suffered a right front suspension failure in the first session yesterday, which meant he missed the whole of the second session. He'll be looking to get as much as possible out of the next 45 minutes.

Lots of cars on track now, finally, and the first timed lap comes from Vitaly Petrov who does a 1:47.673. He backed right off after coming up behind Schumacher.

Heikki Kovalainen does a 1:41.868 and Jarno Trulli a 1:42.084 as Lotus top the timesheets early on.

Vitaly Petrov now goes quickes with a 1:39.8, so nearly two seconds clear. Sergio Perez is third at the moment as he looks to build on his strong drive in Melbourne. Surely the most impressive debutant from two weeks ago?

Ian asks: "I noticed there didn't seem to be many 'marbles' at Melbourne just 'bits of rubber'. Do you think it will be the same here?"

Pirelli were out on the track after yesterday's sessions looking at the marbles and said they were more like the marbles we've seen in recent years than big chunks of rubber. Paul Hembery said: "We had strips in winter testing, big strips. These are actually smaller pieces that actually get picked up on the tyres." For those who don't know, these bits of rubber make it slippery off the racing line and some people are worried it could make overtaking difficult. But Pirelli say the teams are not overly concerned.

Nick Heidfeld goes fastest on a 1:39.4, just 0.1 seconds quicker than Lewis Hamilton.

On the topic of the new drivers, Johan Rincon emails in: "Hello, enjoying your live feed, looking forward to see Pastor Maldonado's race tomorrow, hope everything goes better tomorrow ... Thanks for the coverage."

And Marty has sent in his prediction: "Hi guys, I'm in Perth, Western Australia reading your great commentary. Looking forward to McLaren boys doing well in qualy and the race. If it rains I'm tipping Button for the win!"

And the McLaren pair now top the times Marty, with Hamilton fastest with a 1:38.9. Just as I write that, Heidfeld splits them with a time 0.1 seconds off the pace.

Sebastian Vettel has just been on the team radio complaining about his rear wing. It will have a big role to play in the race as the DRS can be activated for the full length of the pit straight.

Andrew asks: "What's the weather doing? Do you have a live radar image? Any chance of storms this avo to mix up quali? Any more news on Red Bull and KERS? Cheers"

The weather is a bit cloudy at the moment and very, very hot. We don't have radar but we are told thunderstorms are possible today and even more likely tomorrow. Red Bull is running KERS on the car this morning but it is still possible it could be removed ahead of qualifying.

Prateek from Rae Bareli, India has emailed in to say: "After unsuccessfully trying to get my posts published in ESPNCricinfo, I hope I have better luck here! Anyways, after a near miss in Australia couple of weeks back, I hope Force India gets some points tomorrow."

Just to clarify, Force India did score points in Australia with Sutil in 9th and Di Resta 10th after Sauber were disqualified for a technical infringement. So good news for you Prateek!

Vettel oddly saying that the rear wing "will not stall anymore", even though a rear camera view clearly shows it to be working. A bit of an issue there for Red Bull.

Pastor Maldonado runs wide at the last corner - the hairpin at the end of a long straight. We've seen a lot of lock-ups under braking there.

Only Tonio Liuzzi is yet to hit the track, with Karthikeyan out there as I type.

Fernando Alonso working hard at the wheel of his Ferrari as he sets the fourth fastest time of the day, 0.3s off Hamilton's time.

Massa sets a similar lap time to that of his team-mate, as we see a replay of Paul Di Resta locking up under braking in to the final hairpin and spinning.

And after Di Resta's spin, Vrijilesh's email has come in at just the right time: "On Force India, Hulkenburg seemed good yesterday. Its a pity he does not get a chance on the grid!"

Massa improves to go quickest by 0.014 seconds. In to the 1:38s for Ferrari.

On board with Di Resta, who is working really hard to deal with his worn tyres after his spin. He loses the battle though, spinning again under braking for turn 14.

We haven't seen anyone go out on soft tyres just yet, with the current lap times two seconds off the pace from yesterday.

Karthikeyan's HRT was emitting a lot of smoke during both sessions yesterday, and it's much the same story today.

Jenson Button locks up in to the final corner but still manages to set the fastest sector time and goes quickest. Followed by Jaime Alguersuari who goes second with a 1:38.7

Vettel goes fastest with a 1:38.2, a time set on the hard ture, as was Button's.

Karthikeyan dips in to the 1:43s for the first time, doing a 1:43.383 on the soft tyre.

Sebastian Buemi moves up to third with his soft tyre lap. 18 minutes to go and a lot of cars now looking for quick laps on the option compound.

Schumacher gets within 0.1s of Vettel's fastest time, even the soft tyre not managing to put the Mercedes on top. Vettel then goes 0.2s quicker.

Nico Rosberg has just set the fastest final sector time on soft tyres as he posts a lap of 1:38.307 to go third.

The track's quite quiet with 15 minutes of the session left. Only four cars out there right now: Rosberg, Barrichello, Maldonado and Kobayashi.

Peter asks: "What does Webber seem to be doing so far down the list with a 1:44.355?"

I wouldn't read too much into it, he's been doing heavy-fuel runs. We are just about to see some soft tyre runs so that should be a better indication of his pace

Fernando Alonso leaves the pit lane on soft tyres, and seems happier today as he has made no set-up changes. He's completed 7 laps, and Schumacher is the busiest driver so far with 15.

We've just heard that the reason Liuzzi is yet to go out is due to a water leak, but he should get on track before the end of the session.

Both Ferrari's have the track to themselves at the moment.

Alonso sets the fastest first sector of the session, just 0.2s quicker than Vettel who did his lap on hard tyres.

Alonso does the fastest lap of the session with a 1:37.384 to go over half a second quicker than Vettel.

Massa goes second, 0.4 seconds slower than Alonso.

Adam says: "On the subject of rookie drivers, is Pastor a through and through pay driver, or are we looking at a bloke with a fair amount of talent? Can't say his first race really showed the public anything special."

He won GP2 last year with some very impressive performances, especially at Monaco. Everybody was singing Perez's praises after one good race in Melbourne and Maldonado beat him in GP2. Considering he's bringing a lot of money to the team it makes perfect sense for Williams to give him a go, but I think we'll have to wait a couple of races before we make a judgement on his potential for the future.

Both Button and Hamilton are now out on the soft tyres, as the track temperature rises to 43C.

Button sets the fastest middle sector of the day, and again in the final sector to go quickes with a 1:36.805.

Liuzzi is out on track with six minutes of the session left.

Lyndsay asks: "Do we know if Red Bull used KERS yesterday over the whole lap or is it just for starting?"

It is a proper KERS that the drivers use over the whole lap. It turned out the 'startline' or 'mini' KERS rumours in Australia were wide of the mark. However, Lotus is looking in to a startline system for the future.

Vitaly Petrov goes third quickest, while Liuzzi beats Karthikeyan's time with his first timed lap.

A big thank you to Jean-Marie for finding this little gem:

"For people that might be interested, I found a rain radar here: http://www.met.gov.my/index.php?option=com_weathersatellite&purpose=RADAR-PENINSULAR&Itemid=911

The site is a bit slow but the radar map seems to be updated regularly."

Hamilton goes fastest overall, a 1:36.3 putting him almost half a second quicker than his team-mate.

Webber goes second, 0.3 seconds slower than Hamilton using the soft tyre too. And Button just shaves 0.05s off his quickest time.

Everyone but Hamilton and Alonso out on track right now. It's busy.

Vettel is on a fast lap on soft tyres now, but has got caught up in traffic.

Fifth fastest for Vettel, 0.8s off Hamilton's time.

Time is up, so these are final laps for everyone as Perez goes 11th quickest.

Kobayashi goes ninth fastest, so Sauber may be hoping to get a car through in to Q3 this afternoon.

Both HRT's are outside of the 107% margin as it stands, but the soft tyre runs from the front-runners are unlikely to be seen in the first qualifying session, during which the 107% margin is calculated.

Vettel returns to the pits without the camera on the top of his car. It's caused a slight bit of bodywork damage but nothing to cause any problems.

So Hamilton leads Webber, Button and Heidfeld, with Vettel in fifth ahead of Alonso, Petrov and Massa.

Impressive pace from Lotus too, with Kovalainen's 1:39.2 putting him within a second of Schumacher in 10th. It's going to be a tight midfield battle in qualifying once again.

So that concludes the final practice session. Thanks for all your emails and messages, join us again for qualifying in a little under two hours time.
