Qualifying

Welcome (or welcome back) to ESPNF1's live coverage of qualifying for the Indian Grand Prix. The crowd is growing and having got to grips with the track and car set-ups, the teams are ready to turn a wheel in anger

We've had three different drivers topping the three practice sessions this weekend, and while Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa set the pace yesterday, it was world champion Sebastian Vettel who was quickest this morning, finally showing the Red Bull pace

A bit of news ahead of qualifying, at the back of the grid Daniel Ricciardo will receive a five place grid penalty for changing his gearbox

Pirelli's Paul Hembery on Twitter: "Looks like a Vettel pole day, but who is going to take second? I say Lewis, my guys Alonso. But maybe Mark will do one of his stunners."

If you need a reminder of the qualifying results so far this season, they read: Red Bull - 15, McLaren - 1

The tyre compounds will make qualifying very interesting today, with a performance difference of around two seconds per lap between the hard and soft tyres. That means it may not be possible for the top three teams to get through Q1 without using the soft compound

Based on the FP3 times as well, both Virgin and HRT could be at threat from the 107% time if we see all of the teams using the soft tyre in Q1, but it's unlikely we'll see full pace from Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari that early

The light is on and the two Lotus cars head straight out on track at speed, followed by d'Ambrosio and Petrov

Petrov is on the hard tyre, as is di Resta in the Force India

Another new helmet for Vettel, with a number of team members' faces on the top

Mike Gascoyne says both Lotuses are on the hard tyre too, just to get a feel for the circuit before switching to softs

Senna goes quickest with a 1:29.952, but all of these times are going to be beaten when they switch to softs

Karthikeyan is on softs for his first run, as is Ricciardo

Karthikeyan's first lap is only good enough for seventh

Alonso does a 1:27.836 for the quickest time on hard tyres

Hamilton runs very wide exiting turn 15, but still goes third quickest

Alonso improves to a 1:27.478

Webber goes second quickest

Massa runs wide in turn six, and then Barrichello does likewise to kick up a wall of dust

Webber goes quickest with a 1:27.410, before Hamilton and then Vettel beat it

Karthikeyan is half a second quicker than Trulli, but Trulli still has to run the softs

Neither Sauber has left the garage yet

Glock and d'Ambrosio have only done runs on the hard tyre so are outside 107% at the moment

Schumacher runs very wide at the final corner, locking his front left under braking

Glock is out his car and appears to have a problem, so it looks like he won't be going out again

Hamilton and Vettel improve their times, Vettel now quickest on a 1:26.218

Ricciardo heads Karthikeyan by 0.1s. They are both ahead of the Lotuses, who are now out on soft tyres

Hamilton radios in to complain he was held up by Schumacher

Kobayashi on a flying lap on soft tyres

Kobayashi goes 14th with his first timed lap

Button radios in that he's really struggling with a lack of grip, and he pits

Perez goes tenth on soft tyres, and these times are likely to come down as the tyres come in to the optimal working window

The BBC reports that Glock has a gearbox failure so he is out of the session and will end it 24th and last

D'Ambrosio has done a time with 107% but is still only 23rd behind the two HRTs

Kovalainen goes 17th ahead of Senna and Barrichello on the soft tyres

Senna was also blocked by Alguersuari who was leaving the pit lane, but he's now on a quick lap

Senna goes fiftha and is safe, Button down to 13th at the moment and Schumacher 17th

Barrichello in the drop zone, but gets out in to 14th to push Schumacher down

Button is out on the soft tyre, and needs to find some space to get a flying lap in

Alguersuari has gone third on soft tyres

Schumacher still in the drop zone and winding up for one last flying lap

Button finds some space and starts his lap with 10 seconds to spare. Below him are Kobayashi and Schumacher

The flag drops, all eyes on Schumacher first

Schumacher has an HRT in front of him and gets blocked in turns 10 and 11

Schumacher goes 11th and makes it through, but Kobayashi has pitted so Button is safe

Kobayashi the man to drop out in Q1

Button completes his lap anyway and goes third

A good effort from Karthikeyan on home soil, he's just 0.022s slower than team-mate Ricciardo, and both HRTs have beaten both Virgin's, with d'Ambrosio 0.6s slower than them in 23rd. Kovalainen outqualifies Trulli in 19th and 20th respectively

Not an ideal session then for Button, who has used up a set of soft tyres to get through. Quickest though was actually Petrov on soft tyres, just beating Vettel and Button with Sutil fourth

So, seven drivers drop out, with Glock outside the 107% time but he's likely to be allowed to race due to that gearbox problem. Ricciardo will start 24th with his 5-place grid penalty

Q2 begins with Senna, Petrov and Alguersuari straight out on soft tyres. Everyone will need soft tyres in this session

A stream of cars join the track behind the first three who have just started their laps. Alguersuari up 0.3s on Senna and half a second on Petrov

Petrov backs off on his lap

Alguersuari goes quickest with a 1:26.668, 1.5s quicker than Senna

Another seven drivers will be lost in this session, deciding places 11th to 17th on the grid

Vettel goes quickest with a 1:24.657. Everybody on soft tyres for Q2

Senna was so much slower than Alguersuari because he lost the rear end exiting turn 9 and then had to run wide in turn 10 to let Petrov past

Webber goes second 0.6s slower than Vettel, and Hamilton third, a second off the pace

Rosberg goes fifth with a 1:26.078

It seems to take two laps to get the tyres working properly, so the second run is when most drivers will improve

Button goes third, 0.6s slower than Vettel, all of the time was lost in the middle sector as he set the fastest first sector

Still no time set by Sutil, di Resta or Perez, while Senna is 0.8s off the pace after his difficult lap

Hamilton goes second, this time he sets the fastest first sector but loses chunks in the final two sectors to Vettel

Massa ruined his lap by getting the turn 8 and 9 complex wrong

Now it's time for the Force India's to head out. They are in a good fight with the Toro Rossos and Renault for a place in Q3

Senna begins another flying lap with under five minutes to go

Vettel is safely through, while Hamilton, Alonso, Webber and Button should be sitting pretty comfortably too

Schumacher heads out on a new set of soft tyres

Senna locks up and misses the apex of the final corner, running wide on to the dust, losing a lot of time

Sutil goes 12th with his first flying lap

Di Resta then goes 12th, with both Williams behind Sutil

Alguersuari and Buemi have both put themselves in to the top ten, with Alguersuari a second quicker than Maldonado in 15th

Perez improves his best time but stays 17th and is over a second outside the top ten. Sauber looking weak here in qualifying trim

None of the top seven are running again

Senna improves but can only go 12th

Sutil goes 8th with his last lap

Schumacher down to 11th

Buemi goes 9th, Alguersuari stays 10th

Maldonado goes 12th with a good lap

Di Resta goes 12th so drops out

Petrov up to 11th

Schumacher's final lap, and he misses out by just 0.018s

Big surprise with Schumacher missing out, he was 0.8s slower than team-mate Rosberg

Petrov went 11th with an identical lap time to Alguersuari, but because the Toro Rosso had set the time first it's Alguersuari who goes through and not the Renault

So out in order are: 11th - Petrov, 12th - Schumacher, 13th - di Resta, 14th - Maldonado, 15th - Senna, 16th - Barrichello and 17th - Perez. Petrov will drop five places tomorrow though due to a penalty from the last grand prix

Impressive from both Toro Rossos to get through - the team really has sound some pace in Korea - and also from Sutil to get eighth. We may not see those three run in Q3 though as they attempt to save tyres

Vettel was in a class of his own in that session, with Hamilton the only man within half a second. Can McLaren raise its game in Q3?

Hamilton leaves his garage before the green light comes on

The light turns green before he reaches the end of the pit lane, though, and he's closely followed by both Ferraris

Vettel leaves the pits as Hamilton begins his first flying lap

Hamilton's first sector isn't great, nor is Massa's, but Alonso is 0.4s quicker than them both

Hamilton goes quickest with a slow lap, so is beaten by both Massa and then Alonso on a 1:24.586

Massa 0.6s slower than his team-mate

Webber also backed off and did an easy lap before going for a second flying lap

Hamilton sets the fastest first sector

Vettel's first flying lap puts him quickest by 0.149s

Hamilton goes second, 0.037s slower than Vettel

Alonso and Massa pit as Rosberg and Button head out on new softs

Webber goes third, 0.071s slower than Vettel

Sutil, Buemi and Alguersuari do go out on to track to at least set sector times

Hamilton is told on the radio to find 0.2-0.3s in the middle sector

Sutil with a slow first sector. He is on soft tyres and cruising back

Three minutes to go, Alonso and Massa back out on track

Button's first sector is 0.4s down on the best set by Hamilton, as Hamilton himself comes back out

Sutil and Buemi pit without completing a lap

Button backs off, Rosberg goes sixth but is 1.6s off the pace. He then backs off too

Alonso on a flying lap, but a slow first sector so winding up to go on the second run

Hamilton and Vettel will get just one flying lap

Hamilton up in the first sector, needs a good middle one though

He's matching Vettel in the middle sector...

Hamilton gives up on the lap and pits

Vettel sets the fastest middle sector

Vettel improves, but Massa has crashed

Massa is out of the car and OK. He broke his front right suspension on the big kerb on the inside of turn 8

So Vettel secures pole. Button improved up to fifth place, while no-one else could improve

Hamilton will drop to fifth from second due to his penalty, making it an all-Red Bull front row

Alonso will be third ahead of Button, leaving Hamilton and Massa side-by-side once again on row three

Both Toro Rosso's were quicker than Sutil in setting sector times

Replays showing Massa's crash happening in front of Button, which the stewards may look at because Button improved. Button did lift though - his sector time was 0.7s off the pace - so he should be OK. After Hamilton's penalty yesterday I wouldn't bet on it, however

So, Vettel secures his 13th pole position of the season, one off Nigel Mansell's record from 1992. He'll start alongside his team-mate, which is a dream result for Red Bull as it looks to get Webber up to second in the drivers' championship. Can McLaren or Ferrari challenge in the race?
