Charles Pic confirmed a gearbox problem caused him to miss most of the afternoon running on day one of the first test at Barcelona.

The afternoon session was less than an hour old when Pic came to a halt between turns two and three, causing the second red flag of the day after Esteban Gutierrez ran out of fuel. Early investigations at Caterham suggested the problem should be quick to fix, but Pic didn't return to the track before the end of the day's running.

Pic revealed that the problem was actually fixed just as the chequered flag fell but has left him with a lot of work to get through on Wednesday.

"A busy morning but not that much this afternoon," Pic said. "I think the morning went quite well, we finished the programme we planned but then it was a bit disappointing this afternoon because we had a big programme and we had a mechanical issue so we had to stop.

"We will have to see tomorrow, we have a big programme to test and to finish … it was a gearbox problem."
