Williams has changed the engine on Pastor Maldonado's car ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Under the regulations, Maldonado will not incur a penalty as he will simply swap to another of his eight allocated engines for the season.
Piston damage was detected during qualifying and the team put a new power plant in on Sunday morning as a precaution.
Engine supplier Renault Sport said the engine could be used again in future practice sessions, which was already the plan once the V8 had completed its mileage in Malaysia.
