Van der Garde eyeing 2014
Giedo van der Garde admits his focus this season is to cement a place at Caterham for the 2014 regulation changes.
Caterham has made no secret that it is hoping to use the new regulations to join the midfield and as a result will not be carrying out an overly extensive development programme on the CT03. Van der Garde says that the team's approach is the right one and that he too is monitoring what the team is doing for next season.
Asked by ESPN if he was hoping to use this season to put himself in position for the drive in a potentially more competitive Caterham next year, van der Garde replied: "Of course, in 2014 it's going to be a very interesting year for everybody.
"So we have to try to learn as much as possible from the team and what they're doing now in the wind tunnel to gather as much data as possible. Of course they have to push hard for next year because the change in the car is so big that you can have it on the right spot or not. So this is up to the team and I think they're pushing hard for it."
Team-mate Charles Pic, however, said the team's focus on 2014 would not detract his own from this year.
"For me it's not changing anything, my job is to try to give my best every weekend and do the best result, that's it," Pic said.
Asked if he keeps an eye on what is happening with the 2014 car, Pic replied: "No, for the moment I want to be focused on 2013, and then at the end of the year I will even put two eyes on 2014! But for the moment I prefer to be focused on this one."
