Red Bull aims to make life difficult for Mercedes

Mark Webber says Red Bull will be aiming to make life difficult for Mercedes at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.

Mercedes' impressive one-lap pace has seen it installed as many people's favourites for Monaco, with overtaking so difficult around the streets. Webber said Mercedes was well set thanks to its qualifying strength but that Red Bull would be looking to find enough pace to be able to prevent either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg from taking pole position.

"They've certainly had some Saturday form, which is not a bad card to play at this venue," Webber said. "Let's see how the tyres pan out on Sunday; if they're quite calm and they still have their qualy pace then it could be quite nice for them. If they don't then there's options for us to make it more difficult for them. But I think our goal is still to outqualify them of course, shoot for pole, be in a position where we're in charge and not trying to deal with them in the race. That's not going to be a two-minute job."

Having won two of the last three races in Monaco, Webber put his own form at the circuit down to his upbringing in Australian Formula Ford.

"It's been good to me, long may it continue, and I've got another chance this weekend which is exciting. I get asked this question quite often and I grew up on street circuits in Australia: Adelaide in Formula Ford, Surfers' Paradise, so from a young age I was used to having the barriers pretty close.

"I think there's clearly an element of the margin is very small, so it's different to Bahrain where it's impossible to crash the car basically, but here you can crash the car. So you need to be mentally aware of that, on top of that, be disciplined over the course of the weekend as best you can and arrive in the key sessions - which is qualifying - in good shape. And understanding the conditions as well; I think having the ability to read where the circuit's going, what it's doing, is very important."
