Nico Rosberg says his "amazing" victory in the Monaco Grand Prix was down to a "really fantastic" job from his Mercedes team.

Monaco was Rosberg's third pole position in a row, but on the previous two occasions he had slipped out of podium contention due to tyre wear issues. However, he controlled the pace around the streets of Monte Carlo to execute a one-stop strategy and win only the second grand prix of his career, describing himself as "ecstatic" with the result.

"It's amazing," Rosberg said. "This is my home, I've grown up here all my life, lived here, gone to school here, so now to win at home is very special. It's a really special day for me and throughout the whole weekend it went really went perfectly. Then the start was very close - I had a terrible start - so it was close with Sebastian and with Lewis also, but then that worked out well and after that I was able just to control the pace. The car was really good, the tyres held on OK and that was really the key to the victory today so a massive thanks to the team for having improved from Barcelona and I'm just ecstatic."

With Rosberg's win ensuring he and father Keke become the first father-son pairing to win the Monaco Grand Prix, Rosberg admitted it was special but that his main focus was on the "fantastic" progress made by Mercedes.

"It's special to hear that but honestly it's not what I was thinking of when I was crossing the finish line, definitely not! I'm just extremely happy to win this race and also we've had again such a difficult time behind us. The last couple of races we've been having pole position and then dropping back so much there was always that a little bit in the back of my mind today in the race. I hoped it was going to last and I was going to be able to pull it off today and not drop back again because it's not nice when you're starting in front and dropping back.

"Then today the team just gave me a great car and it's really fantastic to see how they've been able to improve in such a short space of time. Little improvements here and there but on this track it suited us anyway so it was enough to make it happen."
