Fernando Alonso believes victory is still possible at the Canadian Grand Prix, despite qualifying in sixth place on the grid.

Alonso was over a second off the pace of Sebastian Vettel's pole position lap in changing conditions on Saturday and will start the race from the third row behind both Red Bulls, both Mercedes and Valtteri Bottas' Williams. However, he thinks he stands a chance of chasing Vettel down on Sunday if the conditions are right.

"Sixth gives us the possibility to fight for everything tomorrow if we are fast enough in the race," he said. "Obviously there is a little bit of disappointment because we felt very competitive with the car this weekend and we start sixth, so that is not a perfect result for the team. We need to get it back and score many points and show our potential. We start tomorrow in a position that gives us all the chance to win the race if we are quick enough."

Alonso said Ferrari and Lotus struggled in the cooler conditions on Saturday.

"We need to remain confident, and although we don't know what the conditions are tomorrow, we have seen again here that we are not super competitive in intermediate conditions and in cold conditions we are even worse," he said. "It's the same for Lotus as well and we saw today they were struggling. Looking at the overall qualifying it's easy to get it wrong with the conditions we had. We saw some competitive cars going out in Q1 and we saw also Felipe [Massa] having a problem and hitting the wall."
