Sebastian Vettel described Lewis Hamilton's pole position lap for the British Grand Prix as "phenomenal".

The Mercedes pair of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg locked out the front row at Silverstone, with Hamilton 0.45s clear of his team-mate. As Vettel was over 0.6s behind Hamilton he admitted it was too big a gap and said Hamilton had delivered "something special" which Red Bull couldn't have bettered.

"Honestly I'm very happy today; I don't know if Lewis either found some shortcuts or if he has something special round here," Hamilton said. "It was a phenomenal lap; I don't think it was within reach today. I was very happy with the lap I had at the end and I think it was very close with Mark [Webber] as well so I think we did what we could for the team. Obviously it's always nice to position well in qualifying, especially round here. Qualifying is good fun, enjoying the high-speed corners.

Vettel added that he feels both he and Webber are well placed to deliver a good result at Red Bull's home race.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow for the race, we'll see how we are looking after tyres but for now I'm very happy for the team. To put the cars in third place with Mark right behind I think is a good position to start from. Obviously our factory is very close to this track - Milton Keynes is not far away - so I'm looking forward for tomorrow."
