Hamilton and Button top British athlete rich list
Lewis Hamilton has been named the wealthiest British athlete in the Sunday Times Rich List for 2014 ahead of former McLaren team-mate Jenson Button.
Since his move to Mercedes ahead of 2013, Hamilton has seen his career earnings rise by £8 million to a total of £68 million. Hamilton recently made ESPN's list of the 25 top-paid athletes in the world along with Fernando Alonso, with the rankings putting his earnings around the $27.5 million (£16.3 million) mark before endorsements.
Button's earnings have risen by £5 million to put him second with a total of £63 million.
The pair's earnings currently surpass those of Wayne Rooney, who ranked third with £60 million, ahead of NBA basketball star Steve Nash, former England captain Rio Ferdinand and Wimbledon tennis champion Andy Murray, who rounded up the next three spaces.
