Others' mistakes secured fourth for Button
Jenson Button believes McLaren did not have the pace to finish fourth on merit at the Canadian Grand Prix, but said he took advantage of mistakes by fellow drivers to move through the field in the final stint.
Button was ninth with 15 laps remaining but made up five positions before the chequred flag, two of which came when Felipe Massa crashed into the rear of Sergio Perez at the start of the final lap. He also made up two positions on the last lap when Fernando Alonso in front of him attempted a move on Nico Hulkenberg.
"We fought our way through in the end and on the last lap there was the incident with Massa and Checo, which you never want to see but they got out okay," he said. "I had a good little dice with Fernando and Hulkenberg, Fernando nearly hit Hulkenberg up the back [on the final lap] and had to dive down the inside and wide, Hulk had to go a little bit wide as well and I dived down the inside of both of them. It was a fun race and good points."
However, Button said the result flattered to deceive.
"I don't think it [the car] quick enough to be fourth, obviously there were incidents and we gained some positions because of that. The important thing is that there is a better feel about the car and we are making progress. In a straightforward race we wouldn't have finished fourth, but we did a good job of making the best of what we had and let's move on from this and have a better race in Austria."
