Sebastian Vettel says he is fully aware that he still requires improvement in several areas after failing to make it out of Q2 during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

For the fifth time in eight races, or sixth if you discount his team-mate's grid penalty in Bahrain, Vettel qualified behind Daniel Ricciardo, who managed to get in to Q3 despite Red Bull appearing to be off the pace in the weekend's practice sessions. Vettel did not appear to make a mistake on either of his qualifying runs in Q2 and he says he is still trying to find a perfect balance between his own driving style and the set-up of the RB10.

"You try to do both," said Vettel, who will start 12th after Sergio Perez serves his grid penalty. "It's not as if I don't like the behaviour of the car I can't drive the car. You have to adapt. In previous years it was the same thing, you didn't always find the golden set-up, so you had to adapt and get used to it. In the race the car is changing a lot, the tyres are changing, so not one lap is like the other.

"That's normal; I think that's our job. There's a couple of things where I am struggling a bit more, but equally I have to work on that, and I am, but it's not a simple fix. "There are no secrets - I think generally it's been quite tight, but [I was] not quick enough to go amongst the fastest group of cars."

Having not studied the data immediately after qualifying Vettel admits he does not think he is losing time in one specific part of the track.

"First of all [Ricciardo] did a good job. On my side I basically did the same lap twice, so it's not like as if there was much left. There's always the feeling as you cross the line that you should have been better here or there, but arguably not enough to make it through.

"It's always bitter when you don't make it into the next round but then again we need to go from where we are now, we get an extra set of tyres for tomorrow so maybe that can help us to move on. In terms of pace I think it will be tricky but I think there is a chance to pass a couple of cars."
