Kimi Raikkonen admitted his own errors were to blame for his disappointing grid position at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Raikkonen will start from eighth on the grid after qualifying nearly a second off the pace of team-mate Fernando Alonso. Raikkonen has struggled to match Alonso all season, but in Spa-Francorchamps made no excuses for the size of the gap.

"It was quite difficult conditions and I just made quite a few mistakes on the last lap," he said. "I was held up a bit on the outlap by other cars and maybe that affected a bit the way I wanted to start the whole lap and get the tyres ready. But I just made some mistakes and didn't get a very good lap on the last run."

Raikkonen was buoyed by the pace of the Ferrari compared to the more powerful Mercedes-engined cars, but said it might be a different story in Sunday's race.

"You would think here and in Monza that the Mercedes [power unit] should have more advantage, like in the beginning of the year in Bahrain. But obviously we improve things all the time and small things here and there, so it's getting better, but the race will tell the true story.

"You can get a good lap time but in the race, it's very difficult to fight when the others are faster in a straight line - even if your actual lap time can be exactly the same as them. We'll see how it goes, but it's been surprisingly nice not to see a massive difference. In the wet Mercedes has the best grip, but in the dry it's been okay."
