F1 stars take on Ice Bucket Challenge at Spa
Before the on-track drama unfolded during the Belgian Grand Prix, some of the paddock's biggest names were taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge at Spa-Francorchamps.
The social media phenomenon, aimed at raising awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), requires someone to dump a bucket of ice water over their head before nominating others to do the same. At the same time, those taking part are encouraged to donate to charities specialising in research for the disease - such as the ALS Association.
Felipe Massa was the first to take on the challenge just days before the paddock arrive in Spa.
Massa's F1 nominees were former Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian - who went on to win the race - was the first to take on the challenge, and retained his trademark grin throughout the process.
Alonso had also been nominated by Spanish football star Juan Mata, and he completed the challenge outside the Ferrari motorhome at Spa.
Among Ricciardo's nominations was Lewis Hamilton, who did jumped out of the car after FP1 and did the challenge outside the Mercedes garage. Hamilton later admitted he would have to do it again and donate twice as his race suit minimised the effect of the cold water.
Red Bull duo Adrian Newey and Christian Horner decided to take on the challenge together, with drivers Sebastian Vettel and Ricciardo doing the honours from the entrance to the Red Bull hospitality building.
On Saturday afternoon after qualifying Claire Williams also took part in the challenge, with Massa and Valtteri Bottas doing the honours.
