Perez takes sprint race victory

Sergio Perez won the GP2 sprint race at Hockenheim for Barwa Addax while championship leader Pastor Maldonado (Rapax) crashed out.

Perez came through the field from seventh on the grid, making a good start and slipping past Adrian Zaugg (Trident) and Oliver Turvey (i-Sport) to take the lead on lap 10. By the time he took victory he had a 6.3 second lead over Turvey, who had started from pole and finished ahead of Zaugg in third.

Jules Bianchi took fourth for ART just ahead of team-mate Sam Bird, who had a remarkable drive through the field from 14th on the grid. Bird picked his way through the field and finally dived past Racing Engineering's Dani Clos for fifth at the hairpin. It was a much deserved two points but after a disastrous qualifying and feature race, Bird will be left wondering what could have been.

Romain Grosjean (DAMS) and Maldonado were close behind and attempted to follow Bird past Clos but both their races were ended when they collided on the exit of the corner. The incident is set to be investigated after the race but it left the door open for Clos to finish sixth and take the final point.

It was a shame for Grosjean who put together a brilliant drive from the very back of the grid on his return to GP2. Whether the performance will be enough to see him retained by DAMS for the Hungarian Grand Prix remains to be seen.
