The Belgian Grand Prix made a reported loss of €5 million (£4.5 million) on its 2009 event at Spa Francorchamps. The Belga News Agency stated the historic circuit had lost €5.134 million despite an attendance of over 50,000 spectators this year.

The news adds to the circuit's woes after a noise complaint from local residents earlier this year put a temporary halt to racing events. Local authorities originally sanctioned the circuit with a 17-year ban, but it was rescinded pending further legal discussions after Spa made clear its intention to appeal.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has already hinted that Spa may have to alternate year-to-year with the Nurburgring in order to spread the cost of hosting a race.
