Toyota offer Raikkonen a contract

Toyota continued their quest to sign a high-profile driver for 2010, offering Kimi Raikkonen a contract. Having missed out on the chance to sign Robert Kubica - who has signed with Renault for next season - the Cologne-based team have made an offer to the 2007 champion.

Toyota team president John Howett confirmed that they had made contact with Raikkonen, who will leave Ferrari in November, and were hopeful the Finn would take them up on their offer.

"We don't play too many games," said Howett. "We put on the table what we can afford and what we think is a serious offer in the current market. I think genuinely we could work well with him, give him a car that's quick. We have had very good relationships with Scandinavian drivers in the rallying times that enjoy life and it works very well, so we could cope with it as a team."

Meanwhile, the future of current Toyota driver Jarno Trulli remains in the balance as discussions continue between the two parties. "We have put an offer on the table with Jarno, I think that he himself is not dissatisfied with the financial offer, the bottom line to some extent is certain issues on the contract and I don't think they are negotiable from our side," he said. "He may well be in the car next year but it's not at all clear."
