Pastor Maldonado is the 2010 GP2 champion despite his second consecutive retirement as title rival Sergio Perez failed to take the win and fastest lap he needed in order to take the title fight to the final round in Abu Dhabi this November.
"It is an historic moment. Not for many years have we [Venezuela] had a representative in Formula One, but there is a boom of interest now," said Maldonado. "The project of our government to support sport is a success. They have invested six years in me to get to formula one and I am ready for the challenge."
Christian Vietoris also had cause to celebrate after securing his maiden victory in GP2, winning race two from Jerome d'Ambrosio and yesterday's race winner Sam Bird. Bird pressed d'Ambrosio hard for second, while Vietoris was able to leadcruise home after taking the third row of the grid after a fantastic start.
Maldonado's race ended up drifting across the gravel trap and into the barriers after swerving to avoid an incident started by Giedo van derGarde who ran wide at Parabolica. But it will matter little to the Venezuelan, who was still left celebrating at the end of the race after securing the title with one round remaining.
Pole sitter Max Chilton finished fifth after managing to stave off the pressure from fellow Brit Oliver Turvey who finished sixth.
