Conor Daly eyes US Grand Prix as a career boost

The 2012 US Grand Prix could be good news for Conor Daly, the son of an Irish former Formula One driver Derek Daly.

Daly senior drove in the late 1970s and early 1980s for the likes of Tyrrell and Williams, later becoming a US citizen after switching to the CART series and settling in Indiana. Also famous as a motor racing commentator for American television, Conor is his US-born 19-year-old son who has risen through the ranks and has recently been racing in the Star Mazda open-wheeler series.

"The biggest boost to his career could be Austin, Texas," Daly told the Austin American Statesman, referring to the scheduled US Grand Prix of 2012.

The pair were in Austin for talks with potential sponsors, with a seat in the F1 feeder series GP3 reportedly on the table. They also met with Tavo Hellmund, the promoter of the US GP.

"Austin will be the mecca of motor sports for North and South America. You've got the perfect platform," added Daly senior.

Conor was linked with the ill-fated USF1 project last year and admits he is still targeting F1. "It's the top level of racing," he said. "That's why we need an American to represent our country on the top step of the podium. American drivers do not have much credibility in Europe but to get to F1, you have to be in Europe. It's a big change for me. It's where I need to go and where I want to go."
