Felipe Massa made it two in a row by winning the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona as Lewis Hamilton stole team-mate Fernando Alonso's thunder in front of the large Spanish crowd.
Massa's Ferrari started from pole position and brushed against Alonso's McLaren at turn one which allowed Hamilton to leap ahead of his team-mate. The Brit had qualified fourth but made a great start to lunge ahead of Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari while the contact between Alonso and Massa affected the aero on the McLaren and left Alonso off the pace. "I thought I was in front of him," said Alonso, "but Massa obviously didn't agree."
Raikkonen retired after nine laps with an electrical problem which allowed Alonso back up to third. Up front, Massa pulled away easily from the McLarens while Robert Kubica secured fourth for BMW Sauber. David Coulthard reminded everyone of his ability by taking a fine fifth place for Red Bull despite losing third gear, while Nico Rosberg gave Williams a boost by finishing sixth.
At this early stage of the championship Hamilton topped the drivers' standings and wrote himself into the history books by being the youngest driver ever to do so.
