Jenson Button has finished runner-up in the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award at a star studded ceremony in Sheffield. The world champion was beaten into second place by 36-year-old Manchester United and Wales footballer Ryan Giggs.

Giggs announced himself "Shocked" and Button looked unimpressed at his runner-up position. In third position was Sheffield based heptathlete Jessica Ennis.

"Any sportsman would say they'd be disappointed to be second, I came here to - hopefully - win," Button admitted to The Guardian after the show. "I didn't but the person that beat me I respect very much, so well done to him."

It was double disappointment for F1 at the sporting ceremony as Button's former team Brawn GP were nominated for team of the year. However Ross Brawn's boys were beaten by the England men's cricket team.
