Nico Rosberg was forced to compliment women's football after having potentially offended female players and paralympians.

With Germany playing host to the Women's World Cup, which got underway during the European Grand Prix weekend, a conversation between Rosberg and journalists led Rosberg to compare women's football to the Paralympic Games.

"Yes, it's like the Paralympics - people who are not quite as good but overall it's still exciting." Rosberg later had to backtrack to cover his comments by saying: "the level (of premier women's football) is really high. I am going to watch it and I think the Germans are the favourites."

At least Rosberg was aware of the tournament and his country's chances. Abendblatt reported that championship leader Sebastian Vettel didn't know the World Cup was starting, and Sergio Perez responded with "Women's World Cup - is there such a thing?"

"I think what he said is embarrassing," said German defender Saskia Bartusiak who is playing in the World Cup. "This shows that he hasn't got much of a clue what he is talking about."
