Webber blames kerbs for crash

Mark Webber said that the size of the kerb on the inside of turn two was the reason for his clash with Felipe Massa that ultimately ended his race.

Webber was trying to take fifth place from Massa early in the race when he clipped the rear of the Ferrari, tapping Massa in to a spin and breaking his own front wing. Later that lap he was unable to turn in to the Parabolica and went straight on in to the barriers. Webber said he had tried to avoid contact, but was launched in to the air by the extra kerbing.

"I got a good run down the straight, braking on the outside and then trying to go obviously round the outside and Felipe started to come across and I thought 'OK I need to maybe get out of here'," Webber told the BBC. "I didn't know if he was going to come that far across or not but that's what I needed to work out when we got there. "And it turns out obviously once I got towards turn two that I started to bail out of the move, but those kerbs are just so high on the inside that if you clip the inside it just launches the car so I think then I made contact with him. And then trying to get back to the pits obviously, and I knew there was some damage of course but I didn't know that the front wing was in the end jammed under the front of the car and then I lost the steering."

Webber also admitted defeat in the championship battle, as Sebastian Vettel's victory left him trailing in the standings by 117 points.

"I think we're all battling for second now. Seb needs to have a very incredibly disappointing finish to the season for anyone to take the championship off him at this point. He's in a great position, he's done a great job and clearly the car was good today. So a missed opportunity for me, and I'll come back in Singapore."
