Buemi closing in on 2013 race seat
Sebastien Buemi says he is closing in on a contract to drive in 2013 and that his current role as Red Bull reserve driver has helped.
After being dropped by Toro Rosso at the end of the 2011 season Buemi was kept on by Red Bull as the team's test and reserve driver. Although that left him without a race seat for this season, Buemi says that the role will prove beneficial in the long term and that he's optimistic he will soon have a deal to get back on the grid next year.
"It's good to be the third driver for Red Bull," Buemi told 20 Minuten. "Red Bull is the number one team in Formula One and I have a foot in the door. This is important. It also helps your chances of getting a cockpit and returning to the grid next year. It's more accurate to say I cannot tell you before the ink is dry on a contract. But I can say that it looks good at the moment."
Buemi also said that he would not take a drive with one of the backmarkers over his current role with Red Bull.
"No, I would not (drive for HRT or Marussia). Of course I want to race again, but these teams are just too far away from all the rest. It's not really racing if you're lapped after just 15 laps and even have to be careful that you do not get in the way."
When asked if that meant he was in discussions with a competitive team for next season Buemi replied: "Yes."
