Stefano Domenicali says Felipe Massa knows what he needs to do in order to secure his future with Ferrari beyond the end of this season.

With his contract up at the end of 2012, Massa appeared to be on his way out at Ferrari after a dismal start to the season which saw him score just two points in the opening five races. Having failed to make it through to Q3 in that time, rumours were that Massa could be replaced before the year was out, but recent signs of improvement have removed that threat.

Now, Domenicali is motivating Massa by suggesting that further strong results could enable him to retain his seat next season.

"I think Felipe knows [what he has to do]," Domenicali is quoted by Autosport. "He needs to maximise the performance that he can because we need his capabilities behind the wheel. We need points to try to attack first place in the constructors' championship, and also to take away points from the other drivers in the drivers' championship.

"He knows that he has in front of him some very important races for him as a driver and also as a team member for Ferrari."

Domenicali admitted that if Ferrari provides Massa with a quicker car then it will help his cause, and as a result is not in a hurry to finalise next season's line-up.

"We need to improve the car and I'm sure he can do a good job ... There is no rush on our decision."
