Sebastian Vettel believes qualifying will be crucial for the Japanese Grand Prix and is predicting a "very, very tight" session on Saturday.

Having been 17th in the morning practice session, Vettel improved in the second session and was third quickest in FP2 at Suzuka. He admitted that he had not been comfortable with the way the car was handling in FP1 but said further progress was going to be required overnight after a close Friday between Red Bull and McLaren.

"I think overall we had a good day," Vettel said. "This morning the car was very nervous and I think we lost out a little bit compared to the others but this afternoon seemed to be quite a bit better, I was a lot happier and both compounds seem to perform reasonably well. Looking forward to tomorrow I think it will be extremely close so we need to make sure that we do another step overnight."

Despite his optimism, Vettel stressed just how important it would be for Red Bull to qualify strongly.

"We need to make sure we get our maximum. Days like today we were able to improve ourselves which is most important and we need to make sure - as I said - that we find something overnight because tomorrow I think will be a very, very tight qualifying session and I think for the race it will be very important where you will qualify."
