Sebastian Vettel admits "it would be incredible" to win a third consecutive world championship this weekend at the United States Grand Prix.

Only Fernando Alonso can deny Vettel the title in Austin, where a Vettel victory will be enough if Alonso finishes no higher than fifth place. When asked what it would mean to become a triple world champions, Vettel said it would be "incredible" after such an intense season but said his focus was fully on doing a strong job this weekend.

"I think it would be incredible," Vettel said. "It's been a very long year, a tough season; up and down I think for everyone. It's been extremely challenging, different to previous years in many ways. I think we learned a lot and we did less mistakes this year. We have a very competitive car, we had one since the beginning of this season; maybe sometimes not good enough to win but still good enough to collect a lot of points so that put us in a very strong position and we are able to fight for the championship.

"Only two races to go so whatever happens this weekend, before anything happens we have to make sure we get the maximum on Friday, on Saturday, because the points are there to grab on Sunday and not before. But for sure it would mean a lot and it's probably difficult now to find the right words."

Vettel added that he didn't foresee any difficulties approaching a new circuit, saying it is something the drivers are used to.

"I think usually you try to prepare as much as you can. It's not the first time we race on a completely new circuit; we've had this kind of challenge in previous years as well. We do what we can and the most important is to get in to the rhythm tomorrow, have a good start and go from there."
