Todt happy with Interlagos safety
FIA president Jean Todt says he has no fears about the safety of the Interlagos circuit following fatalities at the track this year.
Two stock car drivers were killed within three weeks of each other at Interlagos in April, with the first accident being an almost exact replica of the crash that killed Rafael Sperafico in 2007. Those two incidents occurred at the Curva do Cafe corner, and the circuit organisers have since announced changes will be made to that section of track, but not until after this season's grand prix.
Todt, however, says he is unconcerned about the safety of the track for Formula One, saying that the deaths were a result of the cars and not the circuit, with F1's safety standards "excellent".
"We are aware of the incidents that occurred at Interlagos in another category," Todt is quoted by Agencia Estado. "We made detailed inquiries about the cars (involved in the crashes), not the track. Everyone can rest assured that all measures will be taken to avoid repetition of such accidents.
"For 17 years there have been no deaths in Formula One. We know it is a dangerous sport, but the FIA works constantly to avoid problems like accidents and to reduce the risks."
