STORY OF THE ROUND
Harrogate Town performed heroics in the first round after qualifying only three days before their long trip to Torquay. Their tie with Hyde was postponed twice but Harrogate, currently 16th in the Conference North, beat Hyde, from the division above, 1-0 to set up a 315-mile trip to the south coast. Chibuzor Chilaka scored the only goal of the game at Torquay to send the non-league team into round two for the first time in their history. Non-league Macclesfield provided another of the big shocks, turning the tables on League Cup giant-killers Swindon Town to win 2-0 at the County Ground. Other non-league teams to claim wins over more illustrious League rivals were Chelmsford, Hereford United, Dorchester Town and Lincoln City.
GOAL OF THE ROUND
Dean Cracknell (Hendon) Hendon failed to pull off a giant-killing at Aldershot, going down 2-1, but they were allowed to dream for a little while after Dean Cracknell put them in front in stunning fashion. He chested down a high ball before firing into the top corner from 30 yards.
PLAYER OF THE ROUND
Ryan Bowman (Hereford) Ryan Bowman was the architect of Conference side Hereford United's 3-1 win over local rivals Shrewsbury from League One. Bowman scored with a superb long-range goal before making sure of a place in the next round from the penalty spot.
