    Defensive boost for Big Sam

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is hoping for a double defensive fitness boost ahead of Sunday's visit of Hull.

Winston Reid (ankle) missed the FA Cup third-round replay win over Everton on Tuesday but is now back in training, as is full-back Guy Demel who has been sidelined since the turn of the year with a muscle problem.

That means only top-scorer Diafra Sakho (back) and Cheikhou Kouyate (international duty) are definite absentees.

Andy Carroll will lead the line in Sakho's absence and will be up against a familiar face.

The prospect of facing an in-form Carroll does not faze Hull's James Chester - the defender has crossed swords regularly with the Hammers striker since they were eight-year-olds.

The pair first came up against each other when Chester was at Manchester United's academy and Carroll was playing for Newcastle.

Even then Carroll - now 6ft 4in - was a giant while Chester - at 5ft 10in - is on the small side for a central defender, but the Hull player says he has always been confident of handling the 26-year-old, who is 17 days older than him.

Chester said: "Andy is someone I have played against since I was eight or nine growing up at Man United while he was at Newcastle - he always seems to have been that tall!

"Hopefully I have played against him enough to know how to deal with it.

"On the ground he's no different to anybody else but obviously it's his height that causes the problem, but if you can get close to him and get people around him it's a way of counter-acting that.

"I have played against him for a long time but it's going to be a difficult game as he has been in such great form."

Hull's real difficulties may come at the other end where problems picked up by strikers Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez last weekend left manager Steve Bruce cursing the worst injury spell of his 17-year managerial career.

Bruce said: "I don't think I have ever had it so bad. It looks like I am not going to be able to pick my strongest team at all this season. We lost (Robert) Snodgrass 22 minutes into the first game of the season and we haven't seen him since.

"Of course we look at training methods and this and the other but they have all happened in games and there is nothing you can do about that. It is frustrating, though I have to tell you."

Hull are third from bottom and the trip to seventh-placed West Ham will see Bruce come up against his old friend Sam Allardyce - the pair are so close they even go on family holidays together.

Bruce said he has been bemused by the treatment handed out to Allardyce - even by West Ham fans - and criticism of his management style.

He said: "They were in our position last year and there were lots of calls for Sam in the summer and - I can say this as he's one of my mates - he has proved again what a really good manager he is.

"You get labelled some times and tagged with something. Most of us in the game know that is a load of rubbish. I think he has been pigeon-holed and it is a bit unfair.

"Andy Carroll getting fit has given them a huge boost. They look a really, really good outfit and I watched the game against Everton which was a classic cup tie.

"There was one time point where Andy Carroll went down and I don't really wish him bad luck but I thought 'are you thought going to stay down?'. You don't really want that on any player but it can give you a hand now and then.... but being serious they are a really good side and we are going to have to be at our best."

Sone Aluko and Gaston Ramirez returned to training on Friday and they look to be Bruce's best hope of solving his striker crisis if they can prove their fitness.

West Ham impress as victory puts pressure on Steve Bruce's Hull

West Ham gave their European ambitions a timely boost as a superb second-half display saw the Hammers thrash struggling Hull 3-0 at Upton Park.

Sam Allardyce's side were booed off at half-time after a dismal opening period but Hull paid the price for some lacklustre finishing as Andy Carroll, Morgan Amalfitano and Stewart Downing all found the net after the interval.

The result sees West Ham climb above Liverpool into seventh and puts more pressure on Hull manager Steve Bruce, who has now overseen just two wins in 15 Premier League games.

West Ham were dreaming of the Champions League when they sat fourth in the middle of December but four league games without a win, including draws against West Brom and Swansea, had dampened expectations.

This victory, however, puts the Hammers back in touch with the top four and was particularly important given their next seven fixtures include Liverpool, Manchester United, Southampton, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Kevin Nolan's return was the only change to the West Ham side that played 120 minutes before beating Everton on penalties on Tuesday and it showed, as the hosts were sluggish throughout the first half.

Hull's Sone Aluko proved a menace for the Hammers' back four with his speedy runs in behind and the visitors should have been ahead early on when his cut-back found Ahmed Elmohamady free in the area, but the Egyptian dragged wide.

Aaron Cresswell saw a long-range shot swerve narrowly wide of the post and James Tomkins headed over from a corner but otherwise West Ham's first-half display was riddled with mistakes and mishit passes.

Hull should have capitalised. In the 24th minute, Aluko's latest spin around Tomkins put the striker in on goal but he took too long and allowed Collins to block the finish.

Moments later, the Nigerian was in again and fed Jake Livermore in the box, but the midfielder failed to find Elmohamady, who was free outside him, and West Ham emerged unscathed.

Enner Valencia saw his back-post header loop over Allan McGregor and drop onto the crossbar at the end of the first period but that was not enough to spare the home side from a smattering of boos at the half-time whistle.

The Hammers came out with renewed vigour after the break and should have scored when Downing pulled back for Nolan but the midfielder fired his half-volley over.

In the 49th minute, however, West Ham did take the lead. Valencia unleashed a stinging shot from 25 yards and as Tigers goalkeeper Allan McGregor parried, Carroll outmuscled Curtis Davies to prod home his fifth goal of the season.

Having already made two substitutes, Bruce threw 21-year-old defender Harry Maguire up front with half an hour to play but Hull never really troubled their opponents.

Instead, it was the home side who looked the more threatening and in the 69th minute so it proved as Valencia slid in Amalfitano and the midfielder coolly dinked the ball over McGregror to double West Ham's lead.

Three minutes later they made it three. Alex Song released Downing with a brilliant through ball and the winger held his nerve, tucking home his fifth goal of the campaign.

Hull were on the ropes and West Ham could have had a fourth late on.

Downing's clipped ball released Nolan, but the midfielder hit the crossbar from a tight angle and Carroll also went close but the Hammers had to settle for three goals and another valuable three points.
