Sterling offered 'incredible' deal

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has warned Raheem Sterling's agents the club will not be held to ransom over his new contract.

The Reds boss said the 20-year-old has been made an "incredible" offer on a new deal, which has been on the table for over a month.

However, Sterling is yet to sign despite indications previously an agreement was imminent, but Rodgers said the club had been generous in their offer.

"The club has offered an incredible deal for a young player and I have spoken to Raheem a number of times and he is very happy here and I think you see that in his game," said Rodgers.

"The player is very happy and wants to continue working the way he has been.

"He has made some great strides in these last couple of years and has now got reward for that and hopefully his representatives can find agreement with the club.

"What he has been granted here is an opportunity - we see it with lots of young players - and they get rewarded for that but we are certainly not a club who are going to give out way, way above what a player is worth at a certain time in a career.

"It is not a case of giving any player, I'm not talking about Raheem here I'm talking in general, what they want.

"We want to reward our best talents as they are a big part of our future and we are confident that will all be in hand and sorted very soon."

Rodgers has nurtured Sterling through a difficult period off the pitch over the last couple of years, when he found himself embroiled in a couple of court cases, and has been rewarded with some impressive performances from the youngster.

However, he has been keen to keep the England international grounded during what has been a rapid rise which saw him go to last summer's World Cup.

And Rodgers wants to ensure he and other youngsters do not get distracted by the trappings of fame and fortune.

"It is very important for young players, not just Raheem, that they have something to strive for," he added.

"If they get too much, too young then it really sabotages their development.

"That is why we communicate with the player and their advisers - if they have advisers.

"If they are given sound advice they will see that. It is about mapping out the career of a player, it is not just about this deal.

"In Raheem's case we believe this will be the best place for him and I believe he knows that as well.

"His value and worth is very important to us but also you leave something for them to progress on to the next level and for all young players that is important."

Jordon Ibe may have to settle for a place on the bench for Tuesday's visit of top-four rivals Tottenham, but midfielder Lucas Leiva is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a thigh problem.

"He is one that will miss a little bit of time, we are just waiting on the exact results of the scan," said the Reds boss.

Meanwhile, Mousa Dembele believes the best is yet to come at Tottenham, even suggesting they are capable of challenging for the title in the coming years.

The halcyon days of Champions League football under Harry Redknapp have become an increasingly distant memory in recent years, with big-name arrivals unable to secure Spurs' place back at the top table.

Things are looking up once again at White Hart Lane, though, with a trip to Wembley for the Capital One Cup on the horizon, as well as a realistic chance of finishing in the top four.

Key to that have been standout performances from the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris, as well as the fact Spurs appear to finally have ridden themselves of their inability to compete against the Barclays Premier League's best.

Asked if this Spurs team, should they be kept together, are capable of challenging for the title in the coming years, the Belgian said: "Yeah, you see as well how the club works now, the feeling that they want to keep a lot of players here.

"They extended the contract as well, so it is a very positive thing because the players that you saw now that have extended their contract are very good players, young players as well, who in the future will make massive progression.

"It is a very good think for everyone. Everybody knows if the team is together for a long time, it gets easier and easier."

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has a full squad to choose from for the game.

Nacer Chadli could be recalled to the starting line-up after being eased back slowly following a family bereavement last month, but Pochettino has no injury concerns.

Mario Balotelli clinches late Liverpool win over Tottenham

Liverpool's Mario Balotelli picked the perfect time to score his first Premier League goal for the club as he stole the headlines from the battle between England strikers present and, potentially, future.

All the talk prematch was about Daniel Sturridge and his free-scoring Tottenham counterpart Harry Kane.

No-one had mentioned Balotelli, back in the squad for the first time in four matches after a substitute appearance in the Capital One Cup semifinal at Chelsea.

No-one had given him a second thought and when he replaced Sturridge after 74 minutes there were probably not many inside Anfield who gave him a hope of scoring.

But he displayed a predatory instinct not previously seen since his 16 million piund summer move from AC Milan to convert fellow substitute Adam Lallana's cross from close range seven minutes from time.

If he does little else in his time at the club, which remains in doubt despite him surviving the January transfer window, his goal against the Reds' top-four rivals could still prove pivotal.

It lifted his side to within two points of third-placed Southampton, who have a match in hand, and also fourth-placed Arsenal.

Without his late intervention the debate would have centred around Kane and Sturridge.

The Spurs striker scored his 23rd of the season, equalising Lazar Markovic's opener, while the closest his opposite number came was a clever backheel against the post.

Sturridge did win the penalty from which Steven Gerrard scored his 10th of the campaign but that was soon cancelled out by Mousa Dembele's close-range effort.

In truth there could not be a truly fair comparison between the two strikes on show as Sturridge was starting his first match since August 31 - coincidentally the 3-0 victory at White Hart Lane - after two substitute appearances while Kane has been on a hot streak since the end of September.

Sturridge, still feeling his way back into Premier League action after the thigh injury which sidelined him for five months, still looked half a yard short of his very best blistering pace but his reactions in front of goal seemed to be up to speed.

Twice Hugo Lloris denied him, once after Ryan Mason had given the ball away, but the France goalkeeper will question himself over Liverpool's 15th-minute opener.

Simon Mignolet's punt downfield dropped straight at Sturridge's feet, Spurs did not clear and Markovic took full advantage to plant a shot past Lloris, who should have done better given his class.

Tottenham were losing the battle in midfield as Liverpool's pace of passing and movement had them chasing shadows - which may explain why Nabil Bentaleb gave the ball straight to Sturridge and had to be rescued by Eric Dier's saving tackle.

Momentum was with the hosts but Kane's equaliser soon put the brakes on that.

The 21-year-old's first sniff of a chance had been dealt with by Martin Skrtel but he made no mistake with his second, turning Mamadou Sakho and leaving the France defender on the floor as he collected Erik Lamela's pass and fired under Mignolet.

It was the first goal Liverpool had conceded in 416 minutes and the first from open play since New Year's Day.

The game opened up even more, which benefited youngster Jordon Ibe who drove one shot into Lloris after a good run and then crossed for Sturridge to backheel against a post as Tottenham's defence panicked.

Sturridge maintained his threat after the break and it was his weaving run which was halted by Danny Rose inside the penalty area, although it took a linesman's flag to convince Dowd to award the spot-kick.

Gerrard slotted home to make it 10 for the season, becoming his side's leading goalscorer, but any control they had had over the game had long gone.

Mignolet tipped over a rasping Lamela drive and did well to keep out a Christian Eriksen free-kick but Dembele was on hand to turn the ball home from close range.

Balotelli replaced Sturridge after 74 minutes and entered the pitch to words of encouragement from four sides of the ground.

It was more in hope than expectation, although there is still a groundswell of feeling among fans for the Italy international to succeed despite his underwhelming performances so far.

But he delivered when his side needed it most, nipping in behind his marker in the six-yard box to divert Lallana's cross into the net.
