Dunga leads new Brazil side in true test of character

New manager Dunga leads his Brazil side into friendly action against Colombia on Friday with his team bruised but eager to put their World Cup agony behind them.

At the start of his second spell in charge of the national team, Dunga will set Brazil off the leash in Miami to tackle a side they beat 2-1 in the World Cup quarter-finals.

That victory in Fortaleza carried Brazil through to their last-four clash with Germany, who humiliated the hosts 7-1 in Belo Horizonte.

Brazil have been tormented by that loss, but Dunga's short-term task is to lead them out of the despair and for the Colombia clash he has selected 11 members of the World Cup squad, while handing a recall to one-time golden boy Robinho, formerly of Real Madrid and now of Santos, and making Neymar the captain.

Brazil goalkeeper Rafael Cabral said: "Brazilian football is the most successful in the world. We did not do as well in the World Cup as people expected. Our challenge is to return to winning ways to show everybody that things haven't changed.''

Colombia let nobody down in the World Cup, winning many new admirers with their slick game and showcasing James Rodriguez as a new global star, who has since joined Real Madrid from Monaco.

They have kept faith in Argentinian coach Jose Pekerman who has committed to Colombia through to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and he has called on new Manchester United loan recruit Radamel Falcao who missed Brazil 2014 through injury.

Falcao, another on the move from Monaco this summer, might have made Colombia more of a match for Brazil back in their early July tussle, and is glad to be back in the fold.

"I am very satisfied with this new opportunity to be here, after everything the squad has gone through,'' Falcao said.

"It gives me pride. We will look to continue growing because we have important challenges.''

Rodriguez scored Colombia's penalty consolation against Brazil at the World Cup, for his Golden Boot-clinching sixth goal of the tournament, and may take a deeper role than he occupied during the finals with striker Falcao now back on duty.

Rodriguez said: "We must not take it as revenge, but to go out to win as we have always done, nothing more.''

Brazil 1-0 Colombia

Neymar marked his first game as captain by scoring the only goal as Brazil beat 10-man Colombia 1-0 in Miami.

The 22-year-old was wearing the armband in the absence of Thiago Silva and scored in the 83rd minute to hand the Selecao victory in the first match of Dunga's second spell in charge.

The manager has not made it clear whether the appointment of Neymar will be permanent but he certainly did his chances no harm in this repeat of the World Cup quarter-final.

Friday's victory was the first step as Brazil look to get over the disappointment of a home tournament which saw them hammered 7-1 by eventual winners Germany in the semi-finals.

After a slow start, Diego Tardelli thought he had put Brazil ahead when he latched onto a loose ball in the box but the linesman's flag was raised for offside.

Neymar then set up Oscar but the Chelsea man failed to beat David Ospina when one on one.

Colombia were looking short of ideas and Juan Cuadrado, Pablo Armero and Leao Ramirez all tried their luck from distance but Jefferson was equal to their efforts.

Cuadrado then saw red in the 49th minute as he brought down Neymar and was handed a second booking.

Brazil nearly took the lead as David Luiz executed a trademark free-kick but Ospina saved and Fernandinho was unable to convert the rebound.

New Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao came on for the last 13 minutes for Colombia but he could not make an impact and Neymar's free-kick with seven minutes remaining settled the contest.
