Ajax Amsterdam v Paris Saint-Germain : Preview

Paris St Germain boss Laurent Blanc recalled on Tuesday a time when Ajax's 'Total Football' methodology made the Dutch giants the team to beat in Europe.

In turn, the manager of Ajax, Ronald De Boer, whose team tackle the Parisians on Wednesday night in the Champions League, reflected on the fact that PSG, with their deep, deep pockets, are flexing the kind of financial muscle that brings trophies in the modern age.

Since the Qatar Investment Authority picked out the French capital club as its latest venture in 2011, placing Nasser Al-Khelaifi as president at the Parc des Princes, Paris St Germain's potential has become limitless.

They begin this European campaign among the favourites to lift the trophy in Berlin next June.

``To be among the favourites is one thing, to do it on the pitch is more difficult,'' Blanc said at his pre-match press conference.

He added: ``When we talk about going as far as possible in the Champions League, my aim is to win it.''

But Blanc, who predicted such a match would be good for a PSG side that laboured to a Ligue 1 draw with Rennes at the weekend, was effusive in drawing on his memories of the great teams that have come from Amsterdam.

``From the moment you enter the stadium, walk along its corridors, you realise what Ajax represent,'' Blanc said.

``I remember the Total Football team, I grew up with that. It's a great European club.''

Blanc made reference to the sides that conquered Europe in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1995, the last time a Dutch team were crowned champions of Europe.

Eight years have passed since Ajax last advanced beyond the group stages in the Champions League. Last year they were drawn to face Barcelona, AC Milan and Celtic, and finished third, a point behind Milan.

This time it is Barcelona again, PSG and APOEL Nicosia, so while third place may be a realistic aim, breaking into the top two looks another tall order.

Former Ajax men Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gregory van der Wiel return to the Amsterdam ArenA as part of a star-studded team assembled at great expense.

``They have the right to do that,'' said De Boer. ``We must be creative. They can still only field 11 players.''

De Boer added, according to vi.nl: ``We know that PSG have more money to spend. It's hard to fight against that but the team with the biggest budget doesn't necessarily win.

``PSG showed last season that they are close to being the best in Europe. They have great individual qualities and I think Laurent Blanc has managed to create a team from all those individuals.

``Once again we have maybe drawn the worst two teams possible in Barcelona and Paris St Germain, but we proved last season that we can perform against such clubs.''

Of the players paraded on Tuesday, Van der Wiel said: ``This is a very special moment for me to play against Ajax. Amsterdam is my home.''

And while the focus may be on what damage Ibrahimovic can wreak on his return to Holland, a man set to confront the Swedish striker was unflustered.

Ajax's Finnish centre-back Niklas Moisander insisted he had not been having sleepless nights about the prospect.

``I always sleep well at night,'' Moisander said.

Lasse Schone's free kick helps Ajax deny PSG in draw

Lasse Schone's equaliser denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic victory on his old stomping ground as Ajax held Paris St Germain to a 1-1 Champions League draw.

Denmark winger Schone levelled the match with Ajax's first shot on target, just when PSG were eyeing victory in their opening Group F encounter.

Edinson Cavani blasted his 28th goal in 50 PSG appearances to hand the Frenchmen the lead, with Sweden striker Ibrahimovic then expecting victory at his former club.

The 32-year-old former Ajax and Milan hitman mustered five of PSG's 10 shots on target, but his frustrations grew each time he was unable to find the net.

Ajax found themselves in the fraught uphill struggle they had anticipated against the cash-rich French aristocrats, but were able to deny Ibrahimovic's men and salvage a creditable point.

The Dutch hosts slipped behind after just 14 minutes when Cavani drove a low shot home following Ibrahimovic's blocked effort.

Laurent Blanc's visiting side have been tipped to feature among the contenders for this term's title given their spending power and all-star line-up.

The potent Parisians were unable to find the right blend to see off Ajax however, and will view this draw as an early setback given their lofty tournament ambitions.

Schone's equaliser stunned the visitors, the 28-year-old wrong-footing PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu from a 20-yard free-kick.

He almost stole the contest with an even more spectacular set-piece - but second time around Sirigu was able to tip the ball onto the woodwork.
