McCormack eyes Sunderland scalp

Ross McCormack says Fulham are ready to "blow away" Sunderland in their FA Cup replay at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night.

The sides drew 0-0 in the initial tie at the Stadium of Light thanks to some fine saves from Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, although Hugo Rodallega had a chance to win it for the Championship outfit when he hit a post late on.

And striker McCormack is confident the Cottagers can finish the job against the Black Cats and book a fifth-round trip to Bradford.

"It would be great to go through," McCormack, who has scored 11 goals this season, told the club website.

"It's a good chance at Craven Cottage, where we've proved we can beat anyone - we can blow teams away and we'll definitely be looking to do that.

"I've heard a lot of people say that we should have beaten Sunderland at their place, but if you look at the game they had quite a few chances.

"Betts probably kept us in the game so I think a draw was a fair result in the end. If we were given that before the game, a clean sheet against a Premier League team and taking them back to the Cottage, I think we might have taken that."

Fulham have recovered from a dismal start to the season since Kit Symons replaced Felix Magath as manager in September.

They were on a four-match unbeaten run until a 2-1 defeat at Blackburn on Saturday and McCormack is confident they can bounce back.

"We won't drop our heads," he added. "We've got a young team. We feel we're making good strides.

"After the first seven or eight games of the season we had one point. Compare that to where we are now and it shows that we're a good set of lads with good character and good ability."

Fulham will be without on-loan Swansea defender Jazz Richards, who is cup-tied, while captain Scott Parker could also miss out.

Manager Symons said: "Scotty's struggling a little bit with injury and illness, so he's one who might be struggling."

Ricky Alvarez will have a chance to kick-start his Sunderland career in the FA Cup after a frustrating start to his time on Wearside.

The 26-year-old Argentina winger will start Tuesday's fourth-round replay, just the 11th appearance he has made since his summer loan move from Inter Milan.

Head coach Gus Poyet had high hopes of his fellow South American when he managed to bring him in from Italy, but a combination of injury and the process of adapting to the Barclays Premier League has limited him to just three starts and a further seven cameos from the bench.

Poyet said: "Alvarez has been in and out. He's never really had the chance to have a run of games and really perform.

"We will refresh a little bit on Tuesday. He can refresh us a bit and give us a little bit of quality. He has incredible quality. He should make a difference. We need to make sure he's an important player for us.

"Ricky needs to play. He will play on Tuesday - that is one change I will tell you. I'm going to play him because he's the type of player who needs to play in certain games.

"Tuesday is a big opportunity for him and the longer he can play, the better."

Alvarez arrived on Wearside on an initial loan move with Sunderland having negotiated an option to buy at the end of the campaign, and while he has shown flashes of the talent which so excited Poyet, he is yet to enjoy a run in the team.

The same could be said of Italy international Emanuele Giaccherini, whose own time at the Stadium of Light has been blighted by injury.

Poyet added: "I want the 'Giacchy' that we saw in pre-season. He was our best player, with John O'Shea. He is getting closer to that. When you're injured and you come back, you need to play."

The Black Cats set off for London in positive mood after their win over Burnley on Saturday lifted them to 14th place, with all six teams now below them and Crystal Palace one place above them having lost.

Poyet intends to keep changes to a minimum at Craven Cottage, but may give captain O'Shea a well-earned break and could rest new signing Jermain Defoe has he eases his way back into English football.

One man who will be missing once again is midfielder Lee Cattermole, although a scan on his injured knee has revealed no lasting damage.

Greece international Charis Mavrias has returned to former club Panathinaikos on loan for the remainder of the season.

Bettinelli blunder helps Sunderland

Sunderland looked like they would become the latest Premier League victim of a shock-filled FA Cup fourth round until Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli's embarrassing fumble help them turnaround this replay.

Little over a week after Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham and Southampton saw their hopes go up in smoke, Gus Poyet's side looked like they would follow suit after Hugo Rodallega gave the Championship side a first-half lead.

However, an unfortunate own goal from the otherwise impressive Bettinelli was followed up by a fine strike from Ricardo Alvarez and Jordi Gomez's penalty as Sunderland secured a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage.

A trip to giant-killing Bradford now awaits in the fifth round for Sunderland, who dominated proceedings for the most part.

However, poor finishing and fine goalkeeping from Bettinelli allowed Fulham to make the breakthrough in the 28th minute as Rodallega struck home their first real chance .

Ross McCormack threatened to add to that strike but Sunderland pushed for a leveller which came in slapstick fashion as Bettinelli somehow fumbled a deflected Patrick van Aanholt cross over the line.

It proved the catalyst to a Sunderland comeback and Alvarez, the evening's standout player, cut in from the right to unleash a fierce drive to put the visitors ahead with 15 minutes remaining.

Gomez's stoppage-time penalty to a chorus of "cheat, cheat, cheat" rubber-stamped their progress to the fifth round.
