Jonny Evans has admitted he needs to add strength to his game if he is to fulfil his potential at Manchester United.

The defender recently spoke of his determination to fight for his future at Old Trafford. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has brought in Phil Jones from Blackburn and with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Chris Smalling also on the books, Evans' chances are likely to be limited.

The Northern Ireland international is aware he can improve his game and strengthening up in the gym is an area he has highlighted.

"I possibly need to strengthen up a little bit, be a bit more aggressive," Evans said. "I was a bit inconsistent last year and had a bit of a dip in form, playing well sometimes. I need to get that level of consistency."

Paul Scholes has now retired after a stellar career at Old Trafford and Evans is looking to take inspiration from the former England international.

"The manager brought numerous midfielders in while [Scholes] was here and he still managed to stay at the club and will go down as one of [United's] greatest players ever," Evans said. "He had competition from Roy Keane and the manager spent ₤30m or so on Juan Sebastian Veron, ₤16-18m on Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves, people like that.

"That is just what Manchester United is about, you've got challenges and competition for places."
