Everton have rejected a £10 million bid from Arsenal for defender Phil Jagielka, according to widespread reports.

Speaking at the end of last season, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger outlined his intention to bolster his backline, but the Frenchman has yet to land a senior stopper this summer.

The likes of Blackburn's Christopher Samba and Bolton's Gary Cahill have been mentioned as targets, while Wenger is rumoured to be a long-term admirer of England international Jagielka.

It is now claimed that the Gunners have lodged an offer in the region of £10 million for Jagielka, £2 million less than their last approach, and this has been swiftly rebuffed as Everton look to retain the centre-back.

Jagielka signed a new four-year contract at Goodison Park in March this year, and it is expected that boss David Moyes will fight to hold onto his services, despite the Toffees struggling for transfer funds.
