AC Milan have hinted at a possible deal for Alberto Aquilani after admitting the Liverpool midfielder could be of interest.

Aquilani's future has been the topic of much speculation with reports suggesting he is keen to return to Italy after spending last season on loan at Juventus.

A permanent deal at Juve failed to materialise and, despite interest from Fiorentina, no deal has been struck. Liverpool would be open either to a loan arrangement or a permanent departure, although Aquilani is only interested in the latter.

Now it seems Milan are preparing to offer the 27-year-old an escape route after the club's vice-president Adriano Galliani said: "We could talk about Aquilani, he could be of interest.

''He's a midfielder with the characteristics that we are looking for so, like with other players in his role, he could be of interest.''

Galliani dismissed stories linking Antonio Cassano with a move away from the club and Thiago Motta with a switch across the Milan divide from Inter.

''There is nothing in these stories,'' Galliani added. ''Cassano is a Milan player. A move to Genoa for Antonio could only occur if he asks to leave. If he doesn't do that then he will definitely stay here with us.''
